Changes to Chase and points system

You ask about a dirt track legend.........

Scott Bloomquist fits the bill nicely as a villan. He isn't PC and doesn't care to speak his mind. The said thing about it is that Bloomquist had a REAL shot at being in Cup in the early 90s. He was running well in all of his ARCA starts before he got busted for drugs and everything crashed down.

I've enjoyed being able to watch him as a dirt fan over the years though. No one can get fans more heated than Black Sunshine. You either love the guy or absolutely hate the guy - he would be polarizing in NASCAR. Of course, with him nearing 50 years old now, this will never happen.

I got to know Scott back in '84 when he was starting out, and he was strong right away. I was running the races at the Kingsport Speedway where was entered most every week, and was dominating. At that time he was an ok guy. He probably has a different opinion of me as one week after winning his car was about 25 lbs underweight, and I had no choice but to disqualify him. The track mgmt. wanted me to let it go, but I told them we might as well drop the rules. It was an unpopular decision with the crowd, and he swore to never come back. (he did) He said he weighed the car at his shop, but never weighed it at the track. Our scale was calibrated regularly.

Oh, another change that I like is qualifying will now revert to the times set in the last practice session if there is a rain-out. This would allow a fast car out of the top 35 in points to make the race. A situation long in need of rectifying. Also the order of qualifying will now be set by the times of the last practice session.

Teams will be given five sets of tires for practice and qualifying, and four have to be returned prior to the race. New sets will be given back race day. The set used in qualifying must be on the car for the race start.

Long needed change. The new points system is awful though.

I kinda like the new points system. It's not like the old one was THAT hard to understand, but this one is simpler. I think a driver should get at least five points for winning instead of just three though.

And I especially like the changes to the qualifying format. I always HATED the fact that the points leader got the pole in a rainout.

Broyles, they clarified that announcement saying that the guys 36th down in points would still make the race the way they always have in case of rainouts. It will go by attempts, postmarks, etc. So, you could have Boris Said in a one off race at Watkins Glen and he be 3rd fastest in practice but still not make the show if it rains out qualifying.

Well if that is the case, they just negated one of the changes that made the most sense. Why bother? Sounds like some/all of the big teams lobbied against it.

Nascar is not even what the acronym implies. It's not stock cars, its templates.

Fix Bristol first, it is crazy to see cars driving side by side.

Eliminate Nemcheks, waltrips, any last name with dinger by reducing the field to 35. Let's see professionals not Morgan Sherpherd.

Quit changing rules mid season.

Eliminate the chase.

Drive cars we can buy at the dealership.

Ban Drivers from doing commercials unless they win a race that year.

Allow them to fight without penalty, make it a contact sport.

Shorten the season. Nobody watches it during football season.

Just some thoughts

I just could not let this pass. Before, the complaint was you couldn't pass at Bristol, which meant no side by side racing. Why wouldn't you want to see drivers actually racing?

i can't believe there are still people complaining about it. i have yet to watch the race coverage since they fixed the track, but i can say for sure the action all over the track is 10x times better in person.

Morgan Shepherd is just old but he was a very good driver in his time. That doesn't mean he is not a professional. I don't mind reducing the field a few cars but the good drivers get to the front anyway so those cars don't affect the show in my opinion.

Quit changing rules mid season.

I agree unless it is absolutely necessary or something everyone wants.

Eliminate the chase.

I wouldn't mind that but at this point, the chase is not the problem.

Drive cars we can buy at the dealership.

If you're interested in watching a bunch of front wheel drive automatic 6 cylinders race. Not to mention that so much would have to be changed that it wouldn't be any more stock than it is now.

Ban Drivers from doing commercials unless they win a race that year.

Nascar doesn't have the authority to ban guys from doing commercials nor should they.

Allow them to fight without penalty, make it a contact sport.

They don't penalize guys now really, the officials break up the pushing match and they go to the hauler. Nascar has to do just enough to not be liable, they can't promote fighting or they'll be in a court room.

Shorten the season. Nobody watches it during football season.

I'm all for shorter races but it would very difficult to take races away once they're granted.

Just some thoughts

And throw in a road course or two.

+1 I would like to see them add either Road Atlanta or Barber, but since they have races in the vicinity, it isn't likely. That leaves Mid-Ohio, a market not in, but a very tight circuit, Lime Rock, a crap circuit and Portland. Most other venues are near tracks already on the schedule. Laguna Seca - California Speedway & Sears Point, Road America - Chicago, VIR - Martinsville, Sebring - Homestead & Daytona, Indianapolis - itself.

A second race on the road course at Indy would cool, but I'd rather see the IRL do it.
