This thread is terrible. This is a tell me you never played football without saying you never played football type of thread. Sometimes when you come in your favorite number is taken and you have to wait your turn until it opens up.
Sometimes your number picks you.

Matt Rhule has made it so that anyone who wants a single digit number at Nebraska has to earn it. Not sure what the qualifications are, but if you get a number less than 10, you have made a significant contribution to the team.

I do wonder how long it will be before players are paying other players for the number they want. You see this some in the NFL.
Ray Bourque abandoned #7 for Phil Esposito's return to Boston as I recall, and went to #77 (for free).

I'm also not a fan of two players having the same #. I know one is on offense and the other on defense, so they wouldn't be on the field at the same time, but that could affect a 2-way player like Boo Carter.
Messed up the TV announcers big time. They never could figure out if it was #3 Squirrel or #3 McCoy returning punts.

Could be players had a specific number in high school that wasnt availiable when they arrived. Through others graduating became open and they can now aquire it.
Exactly.

I didn’t have my favorite number my first year on Varsity. I had to wait until it was available

Players have a preference for a specific number for numerous reasons. Maybe it was their HS #, the number of a beloved family member, number of their favorite player, etc but that number isn’t available as a freshman. Schools typically work on a seniority system when assigning numbers. When their preferred number comes open, they change. Why do a bunch a fans complain about something that has zero impact to them?

TV announcers messing up which guy is #3 says a lot about their laziness preparing for the game.
