Character issues

Like you know what happened. Get real. He was an accessory, not the rapist. The person raped spoke in his defense in the legal proceedings. That is in the court documents and been reported publicly.

And those documents were supposed to have redacted his name since he was a minor, but someone failed to do their job.

Marlin Lane, CBJ said in one of his interviews that Marlin was his player that was so close to loosing his scolly than any player he has ever had in the past, today Marlin is a model player.

This truly is a testament to CBJ ability to (manage, father them, point them in the right direction) and most of VolNation had no ideal that he was that close or what his issue was, Good for Marlin.

An accessory is defined as a person "who is not the chief actor in the offense, nor present at its performance, but is someway concerned therein, either before or after the fact committed."

Daniel Hood was not a mere "accessory" to the rape; he was in the room when it happened and he helped tie her down. He is legally - and morally - just as guilty as the other rapist.

I can look past academic issues, attitude problems, substance abuse and even petty crimes like theft or assault, but we should draw a line against offering scholarships to convicted rapists. Lane Kiffin was the only coach to offer Hood a scholarship, if that tells you anything.

Of course Marlin only has one year to impress the NFL Scouts while simultaneously trying to fend off a rear echelon assalt from Hurd helps keep him focused as well.

The draft day nose dive of Tyler Bray sends a strong message to players about conduct and work ethic.

Jason Respert O Lineman out of Georgia. back in early 2000's I think. He had an incident at Florida while on an official visit which I believe was with a coed there and some serious allegations were made. Fulmer stuck with him and he turned out to be a good player and model student athlete his years here with no other off the field incidents.

It's hard to say what's what with Dan Hood. Obviously, what he did was incredibly sick and wrong. He'll live with that stigma and that knowledge for the rest of his life. On the other hand, he was pretty young when it happened - maybe not really old enough to understand the gravity of the situation, though that seems crazy, but some kids are different in their development and you never really know how or when their brains are going to reach that level. I do believe I read that he didn't have a lot of parental guidance as a kid. In no way am I making an excuse for what he participated in, so don't get it twisted, but to his credit he cleaned up his life and was a model Vol, a good student, and a decent player afterwards.

I can't comment on whether Kiffin should have offered him a scholarship or not. Looking back on it, it's really hard to say.

But I do believe in second chances. Lord knows I've gotten plenty of them myself - as I think we all have.

I believe Manning also got a few parking tickets and seat belt violations as well at UT... I think a family intervention got him pointed in the right direction

And there was that mooning incident Peyton was involved in!

Though I initially did not like Daniel getting a shot as I to was also very disturbed by his crime, I was reminded by a MAN NAMED JESUS that HE is the only one who can JUDGE someone! Not me, you or anyone else. HE is the only one who knows what really happened and whether Daniel who was 13 at the time has repented his crime and sin. All I know is Daniel's time while at UT was nothing short of Great Team Player. He played offense, Defense anything that was ask of him and he was never in trouble. He gave his all for UT so that is what should be looked at now.

Marlin Lane. He was a doper when he came to UT, almost got kicked off the team for good last season. Now according to Butch he completely turned around, and he could be in for a big season this year at UT.

As always a recruit or two on our board has significant red flags in terms of character, but is highly talented. It seems UT hasn't had a lot of luck with those type of players (D Bonner, etc). Can anyone think of a talented player with known issues who came to UT, straightened up, and had a good/great career? I'm sure there are stories at other schools like Cam Newton, but what about here? I would submit that in general, with the talent Butch and staff are bringing in, they aren't worth the headache.

(Unless necessary, please leave out names of current commits/targets.)

Tony Robinson! Aaron Douglas!

Can't think of any but Florida under Meyer was great at it. They had a te that was a head case but they whipped him in shape. Some Hispanic kid I think. Martinez or Ibanez, I'm not sure. Think he played in the league for awhile.
