Charlie Strong Shakes Up Coaching Staff

Texas is a sinking ship w/ Swoopes at QB. Looked promising his first few games as a sophomore and showed enough flash to keep the fanbase quiet. But he doesn't look like he's progressed. And he's simply isn't elite. Strong inherited a depleted roster, especially at the QB position. It may be time to bench Swoopes and show the fanbase that their fate is in the hands of a freshman. It's bold to do that, but it really is Strong's best move, all things considered. I think Jerrod Heard starts next week and will be the QB for the next few years. If it's Swoopes, Strong better have his finger on the trigger ready to take him out at any time. I talk to Texas fans on a daily basis who think Swoopes in still their guy. There is a lot of denial going on in Austin right now.

Honestly I think Strong is in over his head at Texas and will get canned sooner rather than later. His situation with the coaching staff looks bad. If he wants to stick around he better bring in better recruiters because the talent isn't up to standard and right now Jay Norvell is their best guy. They are 47th in the nation in the 2015 class, which is absolutely terrible for Texas' standards. Right now Houston, Baylor, A&M, LSU, OU, TCU, TTU, & even SMU are all licking their chops and enjoying the benefits of Texas huge recruiting pool. Strong seems to be completely unaware of how vast the recruiting pool is and it's going to cost him his job, eventually.

His defense gave up 38 points. You don't see there may also be a problem with his D ?

865dude beat me to it. Three and outs are not a Ds best friend, especially on the road. Even great Ds tend to buckle under that type of pressure.

My greatest fear is that Chad Morris will succeed at SMU and become Strong's replacement in Austin. Having coached at Stephenville and Lake Travis, his brother coaches at Navasota???, he has vast connections at the high school level and could stock pile talent in a hurry.

Fans aren't the problem, though. There were several boosters who weren't exactly elated with the hiring. They will be his downfall, not the fans. Money talks, and like most programs, Texas receives a lot of money from their boosters.

The Big Cigars aren't the biggest problem either, it's the AD (Steve Patterson). The whole place is one big glorious dumpster fire.

Perhaps Texas will learn a bit of humility through all this?

Nah......

If the follow rumor is true, they are about to get a taste of humble pie this weekend.

Texas is now charging visiting band members $100 each to play at games in Austin. The Rice MOB (Marching Owl Band) has the "classic" response to this:

Rumor has it that Rice MOB is only sending one band member this week due to the $100 charge for band members. They're just going to send a single bugler out at half time and have him play Taps.

Edited: Check that....they're sending three members. One plays Taps while the second lowers the Longhorn flag to half mast. Immediately followed by bagpiper playing "Amazing Grace."

The only thing better would be for Rice to win the game. Gotta love the in your face style of the MOB.

Mack Brown left that program in shambles. The problem is Texas fans don't want to give him any time because they think they should own the college football world.

If they let him be and gave him five years, he'd have that program in the elite.

No...Nobody wants to play for him...Bad fit is a bad fit

TX made a big mistake when they hired him, and we caught a good break when he turned down our offer. I'm not saying he's not a good DC, but as a HC he walked into and benefited from the same situation as Franklin at Vanderbilt. Louisville had some very weak schedules while Strong was there so his record, at least imo, was really not that impressive.

Charlie Strong deserves some time, but this does seem like a surprisingly desperate move. I can't imagine that this sort of staff shake-up is going to improve morale for the offensive coaches. Not even sure why they had co-OCs to begin with. Has the co-coordinator situation ever worked out anywhere?

It would interesting if he failed. That would make 3 great DCs that failed as head coaches once they landed big time jobs over the past half-decade. Both Hoke at Michigan and Muschamp at Florida were great DCs. Hoke, like Strong, even had success at the mid-major level (in his case, at multiple stops).

There's just something different, though, about managing a top-tier program. It's different than merely being a football coach. You have to be a great CEO, as well.

Talent in the state of Texas is falling allover itself .
If you cant recruit in the state and put 9-10 wins on the board every year you need to consider another profession.

In my opinion Mack Brown is/was an average coach. He was pretty successful for many years at that other UT.

Talent will do that for you!
