Chavis' D

5* Athletes

There are only 2 5-stars on LSU's D, Loston and The Freak. Loston has finally moved up to 1st team, The Freak is in rotation on the line and I would say he is playing about 15 plays a game but he basically is already commanding a double team, at least MS was last night, he broke through a double team for tackle for a loss last night.

Chavis did a good job of stabilizing the D after the 2-headed monster failure of 2008.

Now the offense has quite a few 5-star guys, Ware(So.), Sheppard(Jr.), Randle(Jr.), Collins(Fr.), Landry(Fr.), and Davenport (moved to OL, bust).

Don't focus on stars, heck Mathieu wasn't even rated until LSU signed him (nobody knew who he was) and he is probably the best nickle back I have ever seen. Claiborne is a 3-star and arguably the best CB in CFB. LSU has plenty of good quality players on D, except kind of weak at LB. Yes, Chavis has a lot to play with but so did the 2-headed monster in 2008.

His scheme was always a attack the line of scrimmage deal. That's why screens and draws were so effective against it. The dline had already ran themselves out of the play.

He was running it last night at times and it worked fine. A D-line that can generate a pass rush can make any scheme look good.
plus the fact that he MSU qb will never be considered for the Davey O'Brien....

I'd hate to not get considered for this guy's award.

chavis is a top d coordinator. he got complacent in his latter years on the hill. I think getting fired actually helped him professionally. but he was still one of the best coordinators in the game. the play it safe d use to drive me nuts. but i at least felt confident in our D. I think Wilcox is going to be good, but right now I am still worried about our D.

one word:Fulmer. phil would get a 7 point lead in the 2nd quarter and tell chavis call the dogs off we don't want to get beat deep. i'm sure everyone remembers the mustang package, didn't see it last night. they blitzed and stayed aggressive all night. phil was the problem.

it's ironic this thread pops up today because i was having the same conversation with my dad yesterday afternoon...

while "lsu has better talent" could be the big issue, i think i've started to slowly convince myself of precisely the same conclusion you've reached..

fulmer's fault... overall.

of course.. i never really understood why chavis never actually recruited anybody... at least, not in the last few years of his tenure.

might be safe to assume that, like his boss, chief got a little complacent in his later years and assumed that he could coast along for 6 or 8 more years until neyland's record was broken.

losing his job may have lit a fire. motivation and year after year of top 5 recruiting classes seems to be yielding results.

Always liked Chief and his high risk ,high reward approach. UT has had some nasty defenses in the past and now LSU has been filthy as of late. I've tried to study his playbook (have one from the UT days tucked away), very detailed, organized and complex.
