"While the tension between the athletic department and the academic departments has been discussed frequently, what has been discussed less has been the academic performance of the university during Cheek's tenure.
Listening to the academic rhetoric, you would suspect that by reducing the focus / funding for athletics that the academic prestige of the university would be flourishing.
Cheek was brought in as Chancellor in February 2009. In the 2008 rankings the university was ranked as the 96th national university by US News and World Report and was ranked as the 325th best university by Forbes.
After 4 years of athletic futility and Cheek's academic focus, the university is now ranked 106th by US News and World Report (7th in the SEC) and 365th by Forbes (Between Randolph College and North Central University).
There is not a lot of evidence that the pushback against athletics is having any positive momentum on the academic prestige of the university.
In case anyone was curious Alabama was ranked #91 and #283 in 2008 respectively and are currently ranked #77 and #274.
At large state funded universities, athletic success and academic success are highly correlated. They are not mutually exclusive.
I hope that rational minds can realize this and ensure that both are given the support they require."
