Cheerleading Is Not A Sport

I thought that was a given...

Well, the key factor that they need to fund a womens volleyball team and piss away more money, as opposed to cheerleading which is basically an add on to other programs other than a few times a year.

If cheerleading is not a sport, can we have cheerleaders that are over 4'6" and look like women now?

No.

What you forget is that our cheerleaders double as mascots.

So they have to look like Smokey.

The whole deal w/cheerleading wanting to be considered a sport is there's a ton of injuries (much higher percentage than football). Since it's not considered a sport, they don't get the funding a team would normally get. No funding means no training for coaches which means little girls with broken necks and such. I saw it Penn & Teller's Bull$hit, so it must be true.

I'm sure it will soon be repackaged and comply. Sometime in the future. Funny that if it's judged not a sport, the thread is placed in a sports forum. Maybe should have been in politics.

You have to be athletic to do a round off back hand spring tuck or to fly in the air. Cheerleading is a sport just like gymnastics is a sport. They are very similar now days.

Not when you're 4'3" and 80 lbs. Get some 6 ft chicks to do backflips and heel stretches and we can talk athletes.

Gotta agree with VG on this one. Most high school and pro cheerleading squads are mostly just dance teams. But college is a lot like gymnastics.

I would say cheerleading is more of a sport than NASCAR.....imo

I respectfully disagree, I'd like to see you suit up and go 200mph for 3-4 hours without stopping. You have to be in great shape to endure the heat and competition for that matter. I grow tired when people continue to claim racing isn't a true sport, let's face it most average people wouldn't last doing that...

Does this mean poker isn't a sport, either? Next you're going to tell me Phil Ivey isn't an athlete. Sitting at a table for a frivolous amount of hours can be devastating to the buns. What happened to the progress we were making on ESPN when you could be an above average video game player and be on their network. This isn't right...

+1. Plus the reflexes and talent it takes are pretty remarkable. Even the pit crew is athletic. NFL lineman have tried to be jack and tire men. They found it very difficult.

True, but when Jimmy Spencer can do it, I wouldn't go to the great distance of calling them athletes. They're very skilled no doubt. I'm not going to put them in the same category as other athletes.

You're very wrong. It has nothing to do with size. It all relative. I have to be in shape no matter how tall I am. My friend who is 5'6" can do all the stunts plus fly. And its just as competitive now in HS as college. You might as well not even try out if you can't stunt.

No, size matters. Why are most gymnasts/cheerleaders midgets? Because tall girls have a harder time doing all those stunts.
Example, a buddy I lift weights with is 5'5" 155 lbs. I'm 6'1" 180 lbs. His max bench is 230 and he looks ripped! My max bench is 305 and I look muscular but by no means ripped.
Short muscles do provide an advantage in some sports.
