Looks like MTSU could be making a play to get Chief...anyone think he'd go? I'm kinda of the mind that if the money is right and he ever wants to be a head coach, he'll take it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

1) I don't think MTSU can get anywhere close to the $250k area that Chavis is going to be in.

2) If Chavis wants to be a head coach, I don't think he has to settle for a low mid major job.

It sounds to me that Chavis could be in line for a raise if UT wants to keep him. Tennessee needs to show him some love, and pay him $300,000 plus a year to keep him coaching the Big Orange D.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's overrated, but at the same time I don't think there are very many assistant coaches in college football worth $250,000 a year.

When a team is good at passing the ball they usually light us up at it. If their good at running the ball then they run good on us. Those stupid little stats about how our run d was good this year is crazy, look at how many running teams ran well against us and look at passing teams and see how many passed well against us. Face it, when it's crunch time Chavis can't make the right changes during the game. He does ok at halftime making adjustments but when the other teams make adjustments during the game he doesn't know what to do.

I think Chavis is worth every penny though. How many games have his defenses won for us in the past 6-7 years?

Please name them. Was it the South Carolina game when he couldn't figure out how to stop a quick slant or the Vandy game, same thing with the slants or the Notre Dame game with the 5 screen passes in one drive he couldn't stop or the you know what (slants) and the 10 wr drags that ND did on us. Man i could go on for days.

Fever, I understand what you are saying, but anyway you try to slice it, the only thing that kept us competitive this year was our defense. They did have some breakdowns, but they didn't have much of a margin for error.

Chavis is worth $300k. If he isn't, then who is? That defense we had this year was a NC caliber defense. If our offense had kept the ball longer or not turned it over so many times, the stats would have looked even more impressive.

I agree that he did a good job at times, but man he never can make that one last adjustment during the games to finish the job.

Its possible that MTSU has done one thing that the VOLS failed to do much of this year. That being making a solid decision to improve even if it costs em a few bucks. Getting Chavis as their Coach would be a significant step toward becoming a serious member of div 1.

I don't care if you have a top 3 defense, if they are on the field all the time, the other teams is going to eventually do something.

Only 2 teams rushed for over 100 yards on us. That's a pretty good stat considering the teams we played. The biggest problem was at secondary again IMO. Once Allen was gone, our secondary was just average again. Rice for USC and Bennett for Vandy burned them. I think that Allen could have kept them down enough.

I would like to hold every team to under 100 yards total offense every game, but it's just not going to happen. Our defense is fine and Chavis isn't going to MTSU. Sanders maybe...

Ok, look at who you said burned them. Common sense says to double team them, don't you think? How hard is that to see in the game when the same guy is beating you every time. I will agree on our db's, they suck. JA is very good.

Our secondary has been the weak part of our D for some time, but I place blame on Slade for that more than Chavis. If you look at it, Tennessee defense had one average game against Notre Dame and a bad game against Vandy. Vandy I am willing to give them a mulligan on because of the stress of the season. Notre Dame just had an awesome offense and our defense had us in a position to win that game.

Seems to me that we had about 2 or 3 guys around both of those receivers just about every pass they caught. Like Jason said, I think it's more of a Slade thing. I also think that we need some taller DB's. That was an issure this year.

What about the last drives against South Carolina and Bama, by the way we see how bad bama's off. is. I thought that the best overall coaching job Chavis did was against ND, with th exception he couldn't stop the screens, slants and the drags.

I would have ran a man cover 3 against USC and Vandy towards the end of the game because their not going to run the ball with that little time left on the clock, but what do i know i just watch the game. I can't understand why Chavis doesn't get his butt upstairs so he can see everything.
