One would think that Chavis could get a start a higher mid-major school.

I would think a lot of teams in the MAC, MWC, WAC would love his services.

Though those teams are geared toward crazy offensive sets.

I notice that you have 3 from 1998 that 1 year he did a fairly good job.

Something that has always confused me is why Dan Brooks is never a candidate for big DC positions.

Our DL is always well prepared, the players improve, and he is a good recruiter.

I wonder why that is, because I think he's a good coach.

Tennessee Total defense since 2000:

2000: 13th in NCAA
2001: 13th in NCAA
2002: 5th in NCAA (on a tean that went 8-5 no less)
2003: 22nd in NCAA
2004: 45th in NCAA
2005: 13th in NCAA (5-6 record)

Other than last year, show me where his defenses havn't been good.

CPF used to release little rumors like this when angling for a raise after the '99 season.

It worked.

Also note that last year large chunks of yards were given up in garbage time... trading time off the clock for yards.

You bring up a good point, I think Brooks would be an excellent DC. If and when Chavis does leaves I think CPF would elevate him to DC.

Our crummy coached offense lost all of our games this year.Granted Chavis does get taken to the cleaners by Spurrier and such, his defense still played tough enough to win every game this year.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's overrated, but at the same time I don't think there are very many assistant coaches in college football worth $250,000 a year.

There are even fewer head coaches who are worth 2 million a year.

Oh well, no matter who is coaching the d or the o i will pull for them.

Well that's good to know...

man...Chavis has been one of the few bright spots we've had as a coaching staff the past few years. I'll say this though....i couldn't stand him early on....the way UF lit us up, i thought Chavis wouldn't last but a couple of years. and to that i'll give him this...he's gotten much, much better as a coach.

one thing you got to say about the guy...the players respect him. not LIKE him, RESPECT him. there is a difference...they don't call him "Cheif" for nothin'.

One of the things we've all complained about on offenese was lack of player develoment...this is not, or rather has not, been an issue on the defensive side of the ball...and as to the secondary, yes, it has been an issue, but would anyone disagree that that unit did get better this year? I think Inky Johnson and Morely are going to do nothing but get better...

And if history holds true, we should reloading in the front 7, next year, he's done it year in ane year out thus far...

Chavis frustrates me in that we perennially have the worst 3rd down defense imaginable with our team speed. Any long yardage situation sees us drop off of receivers, give them 5 yards, then miss tackles.

Defense against Notre Dame this year was absolutely embarrassing. We knew what they were running and they knew we knew, yet they kept on screening and slanting and we kept on looking like the slower (and worse coached) team. I wouldn't expect Chavis to match wits with Weis very well, but I do expect him to know the tendencies and play toward them. Finally, get your fast DB's in their slow footed WRs shorts, even on 3rd and 12.

OUr D was also a big reason why we got back in that game....

and yeah, our d gave up some plays this year, but how many times was the D put in to a bad situation by the offense or special teams? How many times did they have a big disadvantage from a feild position stand point?

and yeah, the D gave up some plays...One play in the ND game and one play in the Bama game...but you can't stop every team everytime....at some point your offense has to help you out...The USC game...time in and time out you stop 'em. the special teams give your offense feild position. YOu even add two points to the score board. and your offense can't get didley. Bama game...you hold a team to 3 points!!!! and still lose? because you as a defense gave up one lousy play? c'mon...give the man a break...it wasn't perfect granted, but the D was good for a long time.
