One of the greatest third basemen of all time will play his final season in 2012.

Hey ESPN, screw you. The greatest third baseman since Mike Schmidt, a steroid free player, a future HOF, and a player who sacrificed money to play with Atlanta announced his retirement. I turn the channel and it's about a backup quarterback being traded for a 4th round pick.

**** you ESPN.

One of the best to ever play the game.

Unbelievable how good Chipper was.

Career .300/.400/.500 slash line... joining Cobb, Musial, Ott, Ruth, Frank Thomas, and Ted Williams as the only players ever to do so, for some perspective.

One of six players to ever put six consecutive seasons of 25 homers/100 RBI's/.300 average joining DiMaggio, Williams, Manny Ramirez, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig (I'm pretty sure that's the list).

Incredible.

The back to back 7.5 WAR seasons in 2007 and 2008 may be the most impressive thing of all.

It's a freakin damn shame his legs betrayed him.

He would have been right up there with Schmidt if they hadn't.

I got him #2 behind Schmidt.

From 1996-2003, he was probably one of the top five players in baseball along with Bonds, Ramirez, Griffey, and A-Rod.

He played on average 157 games, along with 32 homers, 107 RBI's, and a slash line of .313/.410/.551.

No Braves fan can put a phillie in front of Larry Wayne Jones, Jr.

I never was a big Chipper fan, but the man had a hell of a career. It says something that he put up those numbers in a steroid era and he did it the right way.

His career started with a torn ligament didn't it? Hell of a player, and still is. Body just can't take it anymore.

He is one of my favorite players ever. I grew up in a Cards/Braves family and I always loved those 90's teams and players. He is a first ballot HoFer for sure. Sad to see that 90's era of players officially come to an end.

This is a very bittersweet feeling. Chipper's my childhood hero, but at the same time he hasn't been producing much lately...

Actually, that's incorrect. Was selected to play in last year's All-Star game. Had a .270/.340/.470 slash line. He's not going to play 150 games, but when he's out there, he produces.

Sad to see one of the best go, but I think it was a year overdue. Really feel he should have retire after this past season.

He produced last year. If his name weren't chipper jones and he didn't have the HOF resume as precedent, you'd say "solid year"

Grew up watching him at a very young age with my grandpa. Because of that, it seems like he's been in the league since the beginning of time. He was my favorite player growing up, too.
