Chism played with fractured thumb

You wonder why Pearl is disappointed with some of the fanbase?

I don't.

Who in God's name appointed Pearl, or you for that matter, the judge of the fan base? I've been as supportive of the guy as anybody on this board, but it isn't his role to evaluate and grade the fans. It is his job to please the supporters of the university, not the other way around.

I don't know if you are supposing his "disappointment" or if this stems from something Bruce has said or done, but anyone concerning themselves with a coach's evaluation of his school's fans has a bass ackwards perspective.

It was his left thumb -- not on his shooting hand.

However, it did make it harder for him to receive entry passes and rebound, and he
could only go to his
right.

I am surprised at the nasty comments on this issue.

I thought the Vols played well but Oklahoma State played better.

As for the 3s, 33-percent beyond the 3-point arc equals 50-percent from two.

UT got beat because it got out-rebounded, not out-shot or out-schemed.

I'm not making excuses, and neither was Pearl.

If he wanted to use it as an excuse, he would have talked about it right after the game or in the follow-up story he did with me.

You wonder why Pearl is disappointed with some of the fanbase?

I don't.

This really explains a lot. I think it is uncool to criticize and tear down players for this very reason. Here he was giving his all and in pain and he was jumped on for playing poorly.A thumb injury is extremely painful. He should be praised for his effort!

Why? He didn't play that smart at all regardless of what pain he was in. It would have been different if he played smart and just didn't play well. But he made some bad decisions and played badly.

I am not "appointed,'' but I do have the job to cover the team every day and know what's going on....

I'm not perfect, and everyone is entitled to their opinion -- that includes me, right?

In my opinion Wayne Chism grew up a lot this season and played as hard as he could.

I thought he was very effective, and when he's taking threes, he is just doing what his coach wants.

For fans to be critical of a player that has worked as hard as Wayne lets me know I have not done a good enough job letting people know what kind of person and player he is.

I just thought most fans could see the improvement -- Wayne's the last guy that needs to be getting blamed in my opinion.

But yes, there are some "Fans'' who are negative no matter what -- and at times they take over talk shows and message boards.

I'm just letting y'all know, the Vols' head coach notices -- his head is not in the sand.

Just think before you rip a player or a coach -- they are people, and they have eyes and ears. Sometimes criticism is deserved, but not this time -- In my opinion.

I agree with Mike. Wayne has made big, big strides this year and I commend him for toughing it out and playing with a broken thumb. As for the "Negavols" there is a reason why they do it on the message boards and radio networks. They wouldn't dare say it to a player or a coaches face.

I've listened to a lot of Pearl's press conferences this year and I also get the impression he's a bit disappointed at the fan base. But like I said, the fact that people are disappointed at this season proves that this program is moving in the right direction.

...........

I don't.

How about helping me, a casual basketball fan, understand a few things:

There was 1 time late in the game when Pearl call a timeout because it appeared the players were all standing around rather than moving and making any attempt to get open. The announcers even alluded to that. So, whatÂ’s up with that?

When their best players are in foul trouble, why donÂ’t you challenge them by driving to the basket or playing inside rather than playing outside the arc shooting 3Â’s? I rarely see fouls on people shooting 3Â’s.

When the game is on the line, why let their best player drive to the basket uncontested?

When you have the time and chance to win the game with the last shot, why run down the floor and throw-up a hail marry? It didnÂ’t work in the SECC game, what did they see that made them think it would work against Ok St?

Thank you for educating me.

I get the support for Pearl, but not the actual coaching.

Anyone supporting the strategy for last afriday's game is just lost.

I still like the theory that we felt sorry for an out-sized team in foul trouble. :)

Ask Jerry Green and Chris Ferguson what I will or will not say to a coach's face. While you're at it, pose the same question to Buzz Peterson. Not all of us are a bunch of starstruck children when it comes to coaches. A few of us actually behave like men and are more than glad to take up issues face to face.

You know how Hyams became so close to CPF that he lost objectivity, well........

I totally agree.he improved a lot this season. If he had been able to rebound, we would have beaten ok st and maybe Pitt. It a huge disappointment for the team. They were so close to winning I just wish they'd been 100%. I'd liked to have seen what they could have done.

I do agree with Griffith's point that Tennessee has a whole bunch of people in line ahead of Wayne to receive deserved criticism.

I told you that in about 5 different comments on one of your live game blogs after you called Wayne out. Makes me feel better to know how right I always am :)

My issue was with the notion that Pearl is and should be disappointed in his fan base because they are not satisfied with the season and critical of his coaching.

I actually appreciate the fact that you are on the board. Freak obviously likes it, and I think it gives some weight and substance to have a professional sportswriter as a regular. But when it sounds as if you are joining a coach (who I'm still not sure actually voiced his "disappointment") in scolding a fan base for not being giddy about the job he has done, I think it is only proper given your access here for those fans to tell you that you are off base.

So I guess this means that the Chis will keep hoisting the long ball; you see, it was his thumb that kept him from making all of them....Oh, boy.
