Chris "mighty man" jones what might have been

Pearl wasn't a good PG recruiter either. The best PG he coached in Knoxville was signed by Buzz. Also his best center was really a 4 playing the 5.

(I'm not giving him credit for Jones because he probably would've ended up at Louisville out of HS anyway had he been a qualifier.)

Chris would have been at UT had he qualified and Pearl and Forbes were still at UT. Remember this is a kid who came to camp despite Nike telling the AAU team it sponsored that they couldn't go to an Addidas camp and still play for a Nike AAU team. All of the guys backed out except for Chris. His recruitment was a lot like Wayne Chism's. Both of them had major academic challenges to overcome and Coach Pearl sold them because he continued to tell those guys he believed in them when nobody else did. Wayne was able to get in after he was allowed extra time to take the entrance exam. Chris was not able to make pass the exam.

He improved the OOC slate from last year to this, the home part isn't great, but our OOC schedule is much better than a lot of the SECs.

Our SOS is projected to be about twice as good as last years and that very well may be what saves him. He wins 19-20 last year it's not enough, this year with the SOS it should definitely be enough.

Seriously? Our SOS is pretty bad right now and I'm not sure the conference games are going to do much to improve that outside of KY, FL, Mizzou and maybe LSU. No way this team gets in the tourney with 19-20 wins.

Tennessee wouldn't release him from his LOI after the coach he committed to was fired? Are you sure about that?

I thought Martin said he would release him after meeting with him if that's what Jones wanted, but it wasn't.

Jones did ask for a release and CCM would not grant him that until he was able to recruit / talk to him.

From govolsextra:

Jones, who signed with the Vols in November, said he wanted to be released from his National Letter of Intent in the immediate aftermath of the firing of Pearl and his staff on March 21.

Martin, however, convinced Jones to stick with the Vols during an in-home visit earlier this month.

Jones does not need a release from his National Letter of Intent to accept a scholarship to a junior college.

Johnson said Jones still has two attempts remaining to qualify on his standardized test.

Well all the numbers say you're wrong and I'm right.

Numbers say our SOS will be in the 30s this year as opposed to 70s last year btw.

Right, that's what I'm saying. Martin said he would release him, he just wanted a chance to talk with him first.

When jones realized his score wasn't good enough and he wasn't gonna get in, could he not have asked out and reopened his recruitment?

Nothing stopped him from retaking his ACT a second or third time. Hindsight is 20/20. Looking at the road he took, it appears that CJ took the right one. He will be playing in the NBA going JUCO/Louisville. Not so sure he would have if he took the ACT again and came to UT.

So he couldn't have taken the ACT, gotten a qualifying score, and gone to Louisville from the start?

Jones played along side of Adonis Thomas at Memphis Melrose HS. I believe they were State Champs.

I guess we will see since there is a lot of BB still to be played. However, I don't foresee any possible scenario where we get in the tourney with only 19-20 wins this year. Going to take 22-23 minimum.

Now keep in mind I'm not including tusculum and I'm talking regular season.
