I'm a UT alum who lives in Richmond, grew up a Richmond fan. My entire family went to UR including my wife. What Chris has done at Richmond has been very impressive. This was sthe Spiders first NCAA tourney win since '98. Also, this is the 2nd year in a row they've made the tourney. UR is a small school with a small fan base, yet Mooney has brought in some nice recruits. Kevin Anderson and Justin are both being looked at by the NBA. This year Richmond is starting 4 seniors so this may be Mooney's time to strike while the iron is hot, although they do have some solid returning players. Mooney runs the Princeton offense since he played in it, and his players have been very successful with it. Look what Princeton almost did to UK yesterday.
I would love to have him. In fact when speculation about Pearl's career here began swirling after the start of the season I told my wife that I thought Mooney would be a candidate here, if not other places. She got upset at that. Not really understanding the business of college coaching and the turnover, she hates when coaches leave UR. I.E. Dave Clawson, Mike London, and of course we all know who John Beilein is.
I am one of those UT fans who does not want to see Pearl go anywhere. I know his ethics may be somewhat questionable but our program was nothing before him, a la O'Neil, Green, & Peterson. However if we must replace I would love to see Mooney in an Orange suit. Another name to pay attention to is Shaka Smart. This is only his second season at VCU, but he is an up and comer in the coaching names. Like Richmond, and although I can't stand the school, VCU has turned out some nice coaching names in recent years with Capel, Grant, and now Smart. The ironic thing is that both Grant and Smart are Billy Donovan proteges.
It's kind of sad that Richmond schools have had the coaching turnover they've had, but the market is small and they are both in Mid Major conferences.
