Christie in hot water over helicopter ride

I'm pretty sure his presence on the helicopter adds to the amount of fuel used for those flights...

Yeah, I went there.

but, did he take a picture of his junk and tweet it to a co-ed 3000 miles away?

He might have been able to get away with the helicopter ride as something time-based or for security, but then the limo ride 100 yards from the helicopter to the stands just makes it seem really excessive.

I don't think he helped his cause out by answering the controversy by saying that the pilots had to get training hours in anyway so it didn't cost anything.

When I saw this, I kind of rolled my eyes. i don't think its unusual for a governor to take a helicopter. But the whole thing, in the current climate, just stoooooopid, imo.

If this helicopter ride is an issue, then every single time the POTUS steps foot onto Air Force One or Marine One, the same scrutiny should be applied.

From the presidential trip to the G20 last year:

Obama arrived with 500 staff in tow, including 200 Secret Service agents, a team of six doctors, the White House chef and kitchen staff with the president’s own food and water.

And, according to the Evening Standard, he also came with “35 vehicles in all, four speech writers and 12 teleprompters.” For sure, our president is not going to be at a loss for words.

The press duly reported on Air Force One and all its bells and whistles but also on the presence of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, and a fleet of identical decoys to ferry him from Stansted airport to central London.

I knew someone would eventually idiotically try to compare the travel needs of the POTUS with this.

Look, I don't think what Christie did is a big deal, I really don't. Just terrible timing and makes for easy potshots by political opponents.

But I'm sure if I go back I can find Bush or other Republican PsOTUS having similarly sized entourages for international trips.

Comparing what a POTUS uses to go overseas for a conference to what a New Jersey governor uses to go to a high school baseball game is dumb beyond measure.

In either cases there are excesses - that is the only comparison being made. Doubtful that 500 people were needed for the G20 trip in the same way Christie could have used other means to attend the game.

I am far less critical of what he did than I am his apparent ignorance of what it would look like.

How many trips do sitting Presidents take to Camp David to relax and/or play golf? Those trips are taken in Marine One.

I would have appreciated it much more if Obama rolled up chain smoking riding a bicycle. That woulda been allsome.

Just curious, I don't remember you ever bringing this up during the Bush years.

I brought it up here as a counter to the Christie situation not as a knock against Obama.

IOW, I'm sure Bush used resources excessively too. Christie is catching crap from his political opponents and I was pointing out that these excesses are par for the course among both sides.

OK, I'll rephrase.

Comparing what a POTUS uses to go anywhere on the planet for any reason to what a New Jersey governor uses to go to a high school baseball game is dumb beyond measure.

in other words, what Christie did is only a big deal to his critics

I'd put it this way:

What Christie did is objectively mildly wasteful, but not really worth a lot of comment or criticism.

What Christie did was to subjectively arm his critics with something they will make fun of him for. And he ought to have known better.
