was cool to see him here! and even cooler to see the video on the jumbotron of him running. I would guess many students had never seen or maybe even heard of him; but watching him run was something special. Dude was a stud for sure

I was living in Knoxvile then and my younger cousin was going to school with reggie Cobb.

What a shame Mr. Webb got hurt as he was the best running to ever grace Tennessee and he made it look so easy. Side note I believe Tennessee would have won the NC in 89 if Webb was not kicked off the team before the Bama game, I am still pissed.

Thanks for reminding me ..i wanted to kick. majors ass for that bs

Lewis and Henry had power. They would often run right over you. But Cobb and Webb had pure speed. Usually, they were the fastest men on the field. Johnny Majors said Webb was the fastest man on the team in 1990. That team included Dale Carter.

Reggie Cobb was kicked off the team in 1989

IIRC, that was for smoking dope, right? There are team rules that you do not do & Majors brought the hammer down on Cobb for using. Even though Coach Majors was considered a drunk he was still the boss of the Vols football program.

My Dad was telling me the other day that if Webb hadn't gotten hurt he would have been on the level of Herschel Walker. I didn't see either of them play, but isn't Herschel Walker regarded as one of the best college players of all time?

Yes, Herschel is regarded as being "one of the best" to ever play the game. He would just run over you or try. Chuck was more about being a finesse type running back with speed to burn.

Webb ran between the tackles, too. But, you are right about the speed. One of those rare backs who was a threat to take it the distance every time he touched the ball. He made ridiculous cuts, too.

Watch the long TD run in the youtube Cotton Bowl highlights. He cut that thing back 90 degrees downfield and then turned on the jets to the house. It was around 80 yards or so.

He was a Heisman-type player in my book.

They interviewed CW before the game. He lives in Toledo and is working with youth sports. Andy Kelly said that on game day, he could not remember a single time that CW did not execute his assignment perfectly, whether it was a run, blocking assignment, or pass pattern ... which I thought was the ultimate compliment to CW. Hard to believe he sat out a redshirt year in 1988.
