Did LSU really tell Rick Clausen that he was not good enough to play QB as a Tiger or did the media just hype up another story. If it is true that is a an even sweeter comeback win.

They told him that and they were correct in doing so. Rick Clausen had no business ever starting a game in the SEC.

I think LSU would disagree:)
No, they wouldn't. If they had started Rick Clausen last year, they could have had the joy of going 5-6. By that logic, we should be wishing we had Blake Mitchell at QB.

What if Rick trained under Cut for a year. Think he could have made him any good?

He never would have seen the field for us had the perfect storm of injury and insanity not struck Schaeffer and Ainge. He simply was not the physical specimen to be a top notch SEC quarterback.

And before anybody starts flaming, I'm not knocking the kid; I actually admire him. He was tough and smart, and he made the most of his relatively limited ability. He also pulled the program's a$$ out of the fire in '04 after both Frosh got hurt, and he did lead the miracle at LSU. But in a world of Jamarcus Russels and Jason Campbells and Chris Leaks and Jay Cutlers and DJ Shockleys and Brody Croyles, he just wasn't big and strong and athletic enough to be the guy you really wanted under center.

It did not take an expert to see that Rick had even less arm than Casey. What Rick did against LSU was lead his team. He's a leader, not a talent.

Rick is going to be a good coach someday. I think I'll leave it at that.

It's not true. Rick Clausen was given every opportunity at LSU, including a start. Both Rick and his father have said so. But he couldn't get past Mauck and Randall on the depth chart and with Perrilloux and Flynn coming in, things were getting crowded.

Clausen had only one year of eligibility left and thought that greener pastures were his best bet for seeing the field and maybe get a long-shot at the NFL. Nick agreed with him and the departure was amiable and he got his release to transfer to Tennessee. Not many coaches will release a player to another conference school.

I think Clausen made a smart career choice. He would not have played at LSU. But he surprised me by going to Tennessee. He could have transferred to a Division I-AA school and started and excelled. Thats what Craig Nall did at LSU when he was caught behind Rohan Davey and Josh Booty. He transferred to Northwestern State, started, had a fine senior season, got drafted by the NFL, and he's still playing for the Bills.

I didn't think Tennessee was a green enough pasture for Clausen. But he got to start and win in Tiger Stadium and perhaps that was enough for him.

Perrilloux was a freshman in 2005. Rick played for Tennessee in 2004. Perrilloux had nothing to do with Clausen.

EDITED TO ADD: Flynn came in the same class as Russell.

Thanks for the info I was wondering what happened without the media hype.

You are correct, it was Russell, not Perrilloux.

Flynn and Russell were both in the same class at LSU.

I'm not sure when Clausen announced his transfer, but I assume it was 2002. Do you know when in 2002 it was?

It was June, 2003. If Clausen had been #2 on the depth chart after spring practice, he might have hung around, but at #3 and with Flynn and Russell joining in August . . .

Poor guy missed out on a national championship ring, but he had a career to think about.
