Clausen, LSU

I refuse to hate on Rick Clausen - he had a 130 QB rating in 2004 for crying out loud. Going 5-6 had nothing to do with Rick. He did a great job and was an asset to UT.

i agree 95. clausen wasn't the peyton manning style make all the big plays qb that we want now a days, but he wasn't a scrub either. no one on offense performed last year, you can't just say it was clausen. i firmly believe clausen would have beat SC last year if he had got more PT. There were at least 3 three and outs inside the 50 that ainge couldn't get us one first down to get FG's from Wilhoit. Clausen would've at least got two of those and it would've been a completely different ballgame.

Did LSU really tell Rick Clausen that he was not good enough to play QB as a Tiger or did the media just hype up another story. If it is true that is a an even sweeter comeback win.

I don't think it was personal that he wasn't a starter. I always liked the kid, but he was MORE inconsistent than the other QB's ahead of him. That comeback by UT was a credit to the Vols fortitude, Clausen's knowledge of our D personnel and tendacies(despite a different scheme and D Coordinator), and Phil Fulmer rallying the troops at half-time. :BANGHEAD2:

It was June, 2003. If Clausen had been #2 on the depth chart after spring practice, he might have hung around, but at #3 and with Flynn and Russell joining in August . . .

Poor guy missed out on a national championship ring, but he had a career to think about.

He may just get one before he is done at UT.

No, they wouldn't. If they had started Rick Clausen last year, they could have had the joy of going 5-6. By that logic, we should be wishing we had Blake Mitchell at QB.

I really dont think 5-6 is solely because of Clausen. We definately dont win the Lsu game, or maybe even the opener without him.

Also, I dont think Lsu told him "hey, Rick...you arent good enough". He's a smart guy and he saw the writing on the wall. He had a chance to start, failed, and they kept bringing in more talented qbs.

He definately had a weak arm, but he made the most of what talents he had.

Actually, Saban told Clausen almost exactly that.

Me neither.

I think we went 5-6 because of institutional problems brewing over the course of 6 years.

It's the problem I've termed "The Randy Sanders Experiment." And if you like, "Co-starring, Pat Washington & Jimmy Ray Cyrus"

Guys, the LSU game was a fluke last year.

Rick could be in that situation 10 times, and that would probably be the only time he leads us to a comeback.

I can't think of a single loss last year I would attribute to directly to Clausen. While Clausen didn't have the ability to stretch the defense like some quarterbacks, our offensive woes were primarily due to butterfingered receivers and RBs, and generally bad execution by the other 10 players (false starts, wrong routes, etc). Special teams directly cost us the Florida game. Clausen wasn't a world beater, but we could have gone at least 10-2 if the receivers, RBs and special teams had executed better.

I'm glad Clausen stuck around the program - guys like him can be a great influence on young impressionable players.

I like the guy and I think he gave it everything he had, but there's just no way he was going to lead us to 10 wins. There's a reason he got beaten out his Junior year by two true Freshmen.

Here is what Clausen said after the LSU game last year, after he threw the winning game ball into the LSU student section:

"I just wanted to say, 'Thanks for all the good times, thanks for harping on me and writing articles like you did when I was there saying I wasn't good enough to play there."

That was from the book Orange Crushed, about last season.

UGA, and I'm a huge Clausen supporter.

The INT he threw when we could have gone up a TD was HUGE.

The way Georgia was running it down our throats in the fourth quarter, we're lucky to have kept it as close as we did. They were a much better team than us all around.

Yes, but Brisco later fumbled after a completion, when we were only down by one score. Special teams then gave up a punt return for a TD. I don't think the pick alone cost us the game.

Those articles were written because they were true.

Never said the pick alone did it.

However, the later instances would have been happening in a different game, had we been ahead.

Still pretty awesome to come in and completely ruin the season of the team that spurned you. I'd probably have to gloat a little bit, as well.
Their season was ruined because their head coach, who is a professional idiot, tried to simply run out the clock in the second half. If LSU stays aggressive offensively, Tennessee never gets back in the game.

The pick didn't help things, but Georgia was going to overtake us sooner or later. That would be like saying that one of Joe T's picks this year singlehandedly turned the game on UGA.

LSU's offense in that game was about 80% Erik Ainge.

LSU had a bunch of yards in total offense at the half. They pretty much did whatever they liked in the first two quarters.

How many points did they score that did not come from an Ainge turnover?
