maybe, just maybe, Gruden - the guy whose head coaching experience is in the NFL, where they pay their coaches on average $2 million more a year than the highest paid college coaches, and where multiple jobs are opening up with his name already linked to them - decided to pursue the more lucrative job he was better suited for? The one where he could hoard veterans rather than the rookies he was known to abhor? The one where he didn't have to go on recruiting trips?
Maybe, just maybe, the conversations between UT and Gruden did not happen (or were limited) because of all that?
Maybe the agent said "fantasy land" because he is a jerk agent, a breed known for hyperbole and dramatic statements where none are required?
Maybe, just maybe, this all works out for the better, given Gruden's lack of experience in college, a preference for a system that does not work at this level, and a distaste for players under 30?
I think that several good hires are out there, ones with more college experience than Gruden, and it appears that Hart is interviewing (or at least trying to interview) all of them. I think the UT job is once again a bit of a rebuild, but it has everything it needs to be great and will attract some of the best coaches. And until I see otherwise, I think Hart will land one of them. It's not Mike Hamilton in there anymore (hallelujah), and we need to give Hart his chance.
Go Big Orange.
