Cleveland Dropping Indians Name

I'm just here for the white conservative triggered freak out about something that has absolutely no effect on their lives but because they decided it wasn't offensive or a big deal then it's "social justice marxist socialist something something grumble grumble".

White people are the only ones I see having a problem with changing the name.

Grew up loving the Indians, have tons of gear, watched Major League all the time as a kid. I'm sure no one would be upset if UT changed from the Vols, right? There are other reasons to be sad about the name change besides being a white, conservative, racist, Trump, bible hump, whatever nonsense dribble you're coming up with.

Sure, but there isn’t a reason to change it because the Volunteers doesn’t have a history of racism and 400 years of oppression. It’s okay to say “well I’m disappointed we had to change the name but I understand in today’s culture why that isn’t appropriate.”

I’m a Braves fan. Been one for 25 years. I could say the 1995 World Series lineup when I was 3 years old. I’ve spent at $1K worth of Braves merchandise. I’ve been to 6-7 Braves games in my life. Ive watched at least 100 games a season (with the exception of 2015, what a horrible season) on TV. I’ve spent thousands of hours reading about the Braves, watched dozens of old Braves games and would legitimately think about taking 1 full year off my life to experience a Braves World Series victory.

With all that being said, if they decided to change the nickname, I would be disappointed. But also I would completely understand. It doesn’t ruin my fandom. I would still support the team and cheer for them just as much. It’s just a name. It doesn’t ruin my memories past, present or my future ones

Doesn’t sound remarkably different from the original name and transitions easily with the color scheme.

I'm still a fan, but there is that feeling that this is no longer the team I grew up loving. My dad is from Cleveland, I am not. I don't have ties to the city, just the Indians so I feel a bit of disconnect now. I understand Chief Wahoo not being used, but the Indians part is stupid imo. And don't be so sure that Volunteers won't be deemed offensive one day. Some people consider The Alamo to be the first Confederate monument to slavery.

Who is criticizing, the media or some group? I have never heard a complaint directly on any of these changes. The one they really do need to change in The Lakers. What is a Laker?

You would have to ask the people offended how it’s offensive. There are plenty of people protesting both names.

The truth is, everything that has ever been done and will ever be done is offensive to someone. The problem is that we as a society are moving away from shrugging off minor offenses or being willing the impact change or improve behavior around significant offenses for the sake of whining and crying about other people’s actions that we do not even know or come into contact with.

A different but still equally important issue stemming from this, is the complete erasure of the line of what’s actually deemed to be offensive.

Imagine thinking changing from this is a societal “problem”

Imagine missing the point.

I didn’t miss anything. You chose this particular name change to go on your rant about the downfall of society and how we should shrug these things off because “everything” is offensive. Names like this have been getting changed for 50+ years now

Always. I think there are people that would complain about literally any name change, even an obviously offensive one

It’s not my fault you can’t separate the thread title from the conversation.

Fair that it’s more about the Braves/Chiefs, though not sure that changes a ton given that the primary controversy for them has been around their use of the tomahawk chop (which makes sense)
