Coach Fulmer Local Interview last night

agree about the secondary...we've had individuals that were really good back there, but never a really good group at one time back there...hopefully that will change this year, but the d line and lb's will go a long way in determining that as well...if we can't put pressure up front, no matter how good the secondary may be, they'll give up plays eventually.

this problem with the secondary goes back to the 90's when a lot of people felt they were the main reason UT couldn't beat Florida for a number of years. :censored:

yeah, but i would say the secondary in general has played better since those beat downs by Florida...not dominant, but better. We still have some tendencies in the secondary that are troubling, but we have also had some big plays from the secondary since then...

in the NT game Goodrich was huge, Deaon grant was also huge in the UF game that year, and in 99, i forget who it was, got that int for a td against auburn, and the int returned for td against UGA a couple of years ago....and the secondary basically won the game against UAB (whoopie!!!) last season...so it's not all been terrible, but not a true "shut down" group imo.

What is the evidence that things have changed from last year? Is that something we need to give a little more time to develop?
nothing has changed in secondary itself, what's up front has changed (6 of the 7 front seven are no longer here), and that's what needs to be developed, specifically depth on the D Line, imo.

From all accounts, the LB's we have coming in are very athletic, and should be pretty good.

What about from an overall stand point. Our Defense is good and not a concern for me, but as a team what has changed with the players that might give us a chance to win more.

opinions obviously differ, but over all, the loss up front of the front seven is a concern....but as stated, depth on d line is the biggest worry on the Defense...but having said that, the defense should be pretty good over all. But i also don't see us having the same kind of defensive performace we've gotten the past couple of years, last year specifically. we had some beasts up front, and have yet to prove that we have that SAME kind of beef up front. It will be hard to replace Parys and Jessee up front...

What about the patchwork o-line?

also, from a palyer standpoint, on offense, not much as changed except on the O Line.

but what needs changing to translate in to wins is elimination of mistakes on offense and ST...last year, imo, we made too many turnovers, too many penalties, too many dropped balls etc, etc, etc....and we basically beat ourselves.

using the same players, and eliminating those mistakes could translate in to w's on the feild. But of course we won't know any of that until we step on the feild and play. but one has to think that we won't fumble a ball thru the end zone in a 3-3 game against bama. One has to think that we won't botch a fake punt and turn that in to points against Florida...this list could go on and on to inlcue the Vandy, USC and Georgia games too...

i would like to think that if we get beat this year, it will simply be because the team that beat us is just better than us. i won't like it, but i can live with it. not beating ourselves is what needs the most attention.

all these comments seem good to me. I don't want Fulmer running the offense, I want him looking at special teams, defense, the whole picture. And Ainge should be stepping out pretty quick if he doesn't play better immediately. the defense is going to struggle along the defensive line if they dont get some guys back quick, having Ayers break his hand and fisher having shoulder surgery hurt a lot. :wink2:

Ayers is still playing with the broken hand.

The O-Line has been a concern for a while. Not just this year, but last year, the year before, etc., etc. The O-line has regressed in the last couple of years, while the D-Line has been steady. I usually don't worry about the experience the D-Lineman have or don't have. They all have to start out inexperienced, and we've seen them reload on the D-Line but get worse on the O-Line.

agreed...the depth on the D line is a concern on the defense, but does not overshadow issues at O line or qb imo....

like i said, i still think it's a concern, but i do expect the d to be pretty good overall.

Agreed, and Fulmer being an ex-offensive lineman/coach I have never understood why he has never personally stepped up and addressed this. :pinch:
