Coach Jones Speech at Meet and Greet

By a lot of accounts and statistics he should have been. Strongs SEC experience was probably the trump card on him getting offered first.

I grew up in WVa and know him from his work at WVU. He was very, very highly thought of at that stop. There was some talk of him replacing RichRod, but his lack of HC experience at that time stopped it short.

In any event, you saw me over in the Gruden threads, but I couldn't be happier with the hire right now. I will be flying to Knoxville for a game next year.

Your assessment is dead on. He is a real football coach.

We should all celebrate. The Derek Dooley era is officially behing us. I would say
"in the rearview mirror," but let's all rip off our rearview mirrors so we don't have to remember that disaster.

Consider me on board. Too early to form an opinion, so I might as well assume the best will happen. I'll get back to you in two years to re-evaluate.

Figure some folks might give it two games instead of two years before falling back on the default "God, you suck, horrible hire, go back to Cincy, let's burn mattress, why didn't we pay Gruden what he wanted, etc"

I was a full Gruden fan, but overall, I'm willing to give a guy his shot. While yes, he played in the Big East and it sucks compared to the SEC, hey, he did pretty good with what he had. Now I've got to think how well he can do with a quality program/facilities as well as the nationally recognized UT name. Even sucking as we have done the past couple of years, we're still in the big boy club when it comes to college ball and one step away from a SEC CG and BCS Bowl. We have the talent in place and all we need is that one spark to unify us into contenders. Will it be BJ? Maybe.

Overall, he's pretty charismatic and I think he will probably do pretty good on the recruiting trail with meet and greets. He's not a household name like Miles, Saban, Meyer or Kelly, but give him a chance to start talking and I think he can win over some pretty good recruits.

I would say that and Strong had a good year. Not that Cinci didn't, but L'ville got a lot of attention for their 9-0 start. For that reason Strong's name was hotter this year.

Let's be honest though, if you looked at their resumes alone Butch should have gotten the nod. Also, the butthurt grudenites act like no one wanted this guy. The Cinci AD said no less than 5 BCS schools came calling.

I said it in one of your other threads, as long as the players buy in he will be successful.

....While yes, he played in the Big East and it sucks compared to the SEC...,

Not picking on you specifically Grand Vol but I don't understand this logic and I've seen it on here a lot. The quality coaches in the SEC have jobs. It's not like we were going to poach Saban, Miles, Richt, Spurrier, etc from their current employers. And when you break down most of those guys they had little to no SEC experience before hand. Saban came from Mich St where his best season was 9 wins. Meyer came from Utah and promptly signed the #1 class. Hell, look what Franklin is doing at ficken VANDY of all places and he was just a coordinator at Maryland.

Also, CBJ was playing against Big East teams with Big East talent and winning consistently. Before that his was playing MAC teams with MAC talent and winning consistently. That's a pattern. His system is sound. At this point its all about recruiting SEC talent. If he can do that history indicates he will win consistently.

Dude during the speech, talking to him, and during the presser I saw peoples eyes welled up, I saw mega boosters looking at each other in delight, and people more excited than at any time this year post Florida. It was humbling to be in the room. The only place I have seen or heard anything negative is on this forum and Twitter and that is lessening by the hour.

How am supposed to believe this when the mega boosters are fuming mad at Hart for going rogue and hiring CBJ to begin with? :hmm:

I agree with you on all counts. But let's face it, the Big East is a mid level conference compared to the SEC. Take any team from the Big East and drop them into an SEC schedule for a year. I can flat guarantee you they will finish no better than we did this year.

Point is, you can go 9-3 or 8-4 in the Big East and still be conference champion. You lose one in the SEC and your hopes of being in the BCS Championship are in serious jeopardy. Look at the SEC East this year for example. Three 1 loss teams. The Big East is just not SEC ball.

Now, if you continue reading on in my post, you'll see the question, "what will he do with great facilities and a nationally recognized name?" I tend to think good things as he's already proven himself a winner, albeit in the MAC and Big East, but with a better recruiting base and better facilities and a bigger name than Cincy. But I tend to think he will do good things here.

Not to pick on you, but you need to add one other thing to your question: "...and better players." Yes, the schedule is harder in the SEC. but the players he will have at Tennessee will be significantly better than those in his previous stops.

The thing I like about coaches that got their starts in the smaller conferences is that they HAVE to learn to coach up players to survive. They don't get the top talent, so they have to teach their kids to play.

Saban started in the MAC, moved to the B1G and then the SEC.

Urban Meier started in the MAC, then the WAC, then the SEC.

Butch started in the MAC, then the Big East and now the SEC.

Winning coaches do it everywhere they coach. I believe our upside is really good right now.

no, I agree with you and that was kind of unspoken in my post. It's true he will have better talent this year. I personally believe we had the talent for a top 10 if not BCS bowl team this year. And the guys coming in are just as talented in my opinion. Unfortunately they just weren't being coached to their potential in my opinion.

Better players, facilities and recruiting. All things that will help bring us back into contention.

Ehhh..it wasn't that spectacular. He said everything a coach is supposed to say. He named dropped Peyton manning which is an automatic win amongst Tennessee fans. It's a nice way to break the ice. I thought he did a great job being fired up and all but that means nothing right now. I think he def stretched the truth an his former team giving him a standing ovation for taking another job. he should've been at ridge lands game last night for Von bell. The kid is a 5 star who is a vol fan but will end up at Bama bc they shown the interest in wanting him. I know he just got hired but if u wanna get people firmly behind u, get that kid now.

The poor guy was probably wiped out by the end of the day. He had to tell his former team goodbye, meet his new team, go through the media circus, do all the PR crap, meet the current staff and then fire them....

He may have squeeked in a few calls but I think hits the recruiting trail hard starting tomorrow. Not much time left before the dead period. He may not see knoxville at a next week.

I heard that he was at a high school game last night watching some kid. I want to say it was in Chattanooga, but not positive.
