Actually Twitter does not suspend you for gaining that many followers a day. It is the other way around...if you follow too many people in ratio to your own follower count. Many people receive well over 1000 followers a day (Charlie Sheen actually gained 1M+ in less than 24 hrs).
Ah. Yes. That makes sense. I had read that there are new twitter rules that flag accounts that have more than 1,000 new followers a day because of third party sites that are now selling follower's information as a tool for people to spam them or gain followers for business purposes.
But after reading more...it is most likely the unfollowing/ new following rule that applies. I am assuming that Cincy fans might be unfollowing CBJ a rapid daily rate considering he is using his old twitter feed to update fans about Tennessee info.
