Recently I’ve had the opportunity to hear and in some cases see coach Martin on various media outlets…wow, he couldn’t be a more a polar opposite from coach Pearl in terms of communication skills and public speaking.

Rarely does he answer the question posed rather grunts out one cliché after another…and like it or not these are critical elements for someone in such a high profile leadership role of our university.

Dang, that humps....because we all know the SEC is won or lost at press conferences

I wasn't aware that press conferences determine if a basketball coach is a success or not. Oh that's right, they don't...

He handles himself fine. You guys are just ridiculous. If a guy doesn't come across like a damn car salesman, then you're against him. Let the man coach and shut your mouths.

The critical element for a head basketball coach is winning basketball games. Last time I checked, basketball games are neither won nor lost at press conferences.

He does fine. Bruce isn't coming back to sell you a used beater car at every press conference, get used to it.

If that were the case, we'd have a Les Miles vs Derek Dooley showdown every season over in football.

Miles vs. Dooley…. would that represent the embodiment of effective communication to you….hummm, kinda telling...

How about he talks about what he wants and you do the same. Half of your post count is BP related. Stop acting like he punched a baby and did nothing good for the university. You don't like him, I get it...but it's okay that others did though.

Who cares what he does in a presser.
Practice and game floor he's INTENSE.
He'll do well here.

I'm not buying a used Oldsmobile so it doesn't really matter to me how he comes across. Some are going to find any little thing they can

I think op has a valid point. I hope Coach Martin does a great job but just like with CDD there is a lot more to it than just coaching. There is a public relations and community outreach aspect to being a head coach at the University of Tennessee. All things being equal you would hope for someone who is a great x's and o's coach, a great recruiter, and a great promoter, like a Ray Mears or the dude at Ky.

Further a coaches ability to display charisma and charm with the media sometimes overlaps and is an indicator or his communication style and ability with recruits and players.

The jury is still out and of course Martin and staff will have at least 4 years to prove what they can accomplish but when they have to send Bob Kessling along with Martin and pretend to have a question and answer session just to fill up time you realize just how limited Martin is as a speaker which limits his role in community fundraisers etc.

Les Miles while also a poor speaker has a genuinely likable personality and his players absolutely love him, he is a great recruiter and has managed to overcome his speaking shortcomings. He is likely the exception to the rule but I would certainly be happy with similar results on the basketball court.

Like him or not Pearl brought a certain energy and enthusiasm to Tommy Bowl and was part of the entertainment. At the end of the day Tennessee basketball is competing for entertainment dollars. I believe it was Jerry Green who recommended that if we didn't like it we could go be entertained by going to Walmart or Kmart or something to that effect.

I wish him great success. I think how successful he is in recruiting will ultimately decide his fate so lets hope he does a great job in the living rooms.

From what I've read, this exactly describes Cuonzo's personality/demeanor.

Folks, he simply doesn't have a used car salesman personality, as Pearl did. He comes across as sincere and knowledgeable. He isn't trying to sell himself and will let his teams performance sell the program. I'm fine with his public relations performance. If you win, they will come. He appears confident in his team and in his coaching ability. No need to constantly try to sell yourself and your program in every public relations event.

He better win, because he is generating zero interest in the program off-the-court.

Really? I think Stokes just visited last weekend. That's the only interest he needs to generate right now. Recruits.

If some 'fans' don't come to the games, it's because they're a lot of bitter children.

Martin is here to coach. And who cares if he doesn't pander to the joke of a media we have in Knoxville.

I think all sane people would agree he's surpassing expectations so far in generating interest from solid recruits. With the current state of the program, that's the most positive thing he can do. Jumping on tables is NOT going to build the program back up this time....
