Coach Martin and the media....

Another clueless post by a Pearl homer.

You mean realistic post. And I am not a Pearl homer.

You all can pretend that it doesn't matter whether or not that we have a coach who is invisible in the community. Just don't start complaining when we have less than 10,000 people at the games. Because that's what is going to happen when no one is selling a mediocre program.

Winning is the greatest salesman. Always will be. Once Cuonzo cleans up Pearl's mess, the bandwagoners will come crawling out of mama's basement again.

That's what makes me sick. I hate the "what have you done for me lately" world we live in. I'm clueless if the guys going to be a good coach for UT but I'm willing to let him coach first before forming an opinion. All i know is I'm a huge basketball fan and the things I've seen from him so far, I love!

- He's going after the best available (realistic) guys to come to UT
- Seems like a really hard worker with a high basketball IQ
- Talks about actually running an offense (no shot at Pearl but that was frustrating to watch)
- Embraced UT in one of our darkest hours when we thought we were fixing to get hammered with violations

...that alone warrants some type of respect. I get why people liked Pearl and wished he was still here but CCM wears orange and white and is your basketball coach now. Love it

I agree that we need to wait and see what CCM's capabilities are. We just don't know right now. Some on here hail him as the second coming. Truth is we just don't know yet.

Actually it is not. I haven't seen less enthusiasm in a long time. And, considering he is a new coach, that is not good.

That's his personality, to state it reflects his enthusiasm for the job is absolutely asinine...

So, Syracuse wins because Jim Boeheim give good press conference? Or Tom Izzo? Or Roy Williams? Bill Self? Coach K? These guys' media saavy is obviously what propelled them the the top of their profession. Coach Martin would do well to follow their example.

Not just his enthusiasm, but everyone in general.

I'm glad the players aren't enthusiastic, it's because they are dead tired from the extremely physical practices CCM is making them do.

This is what this young team needs, a wake-up call and a disciplined approach to the game. However, you probably have no knowledge of the program other than of Pearl, so you wouldn't be able to use context or logic in this situation...

He might be boring in interviews but I think I can get use to the "serious, down to business" type if it means getting the job done. Win or lose, he'll probably be the same. I like that.

I think op has a valid point. I hope Coach Martin does a great job but just like with CDD there is a lot more to it than just coaching. There is a public relations and community outreach aspect to being a head coach at the University of Tennessee. All things being equal you would hope for someone who is a great x's and o's coach, a great recruiter, and a great promoter, like a Ray Mears or the dude at Ky.

Further a coaches ability to display charisma and charm with the media sometimes overlaps and is an indicator or his communication style and ability with recruits and players.

The jury is still out and of course Martin and staff will have at least 4 years to prove what they can accomplish but when they have to send Bob Kessling along with Martin and pretend to have a question and answer session just to fill up time you realize just how limited Martin is as a speaker which limits his role in community fundraisers etc.

Les Miles while also a poor speaker has a genuinely likable personality and his players absolutely love him, he is a great recruiter and has managed to overcome his speaking shortcomings. He is likely the exception to the rule but I would certainly be happy with similar results on the basketball court.

Like him or not Pearl brought a certain energy and enthusiasm to Tommy Bowl and was part of the entertainment. At the end of the day Tennessee basketball is competing for entertainment dollars. I believe it was Jerry Green who recommended that if we didn't like it we could go be entertained by going to Walmart or Kmart or something to that effect.

I wish him great success. I think how successful he is in recruiting will ultimately decide his fate so lets hope he does a great job in the living rooms.

well said...

I agree. Just because he doesn't jump on tables and scream out enthusiasm does not mean he can't coach.
If he is confident about what he can do, so be it. As Dizzy Dean once said " If you can do it, it ain't bragging".

Hate to go Field of Dreams here, but "If you build it, they will come."

If you win at UT, they will come out to watch.

Who in general? The media hacks who fell for Pearl's shtick? Or the largely ignorant portion of our fanbase?

Yes only the people that hate coach Pearl and are not worried about Coach Martin are the intelligent posters on this board.

They are pretty entertaining and engaging. Having personally met Roy and coach k I can tell you that they give off a much more personable vibe.

That said - lets not under appreciate the pressure and situation ccm is experiencing. His emotions and personality will reveal itself through competition.
