As the season winds down, I continue to read article after article speculating that this is Coach Summitt's final season as the coach of the Lady Vols.

I just wanted to say that I hope she continues through her contract of 2013-2014. With one additional season, she will be able to surpass the 1100 win mark... an achievement that is seemingly impossible in today's coaching climate. With two seasons, 1150 is in her sights. I would love for her final season to be a season worthy of her legacy. While the bounce back against KY was nice, I would like to see a season where the team plays consistently and with passion like that 1997 Championship team.

We love you Coach Summitt! Keep coaching and doing what you love! Go Lady Vols!

i would like to see this happen, but with this terrible disease, i just don't think it will. my mother-inlaw-died of this and it just gets worse and time goes by. we can'r be selfish for her to obtain goals that are meaningless as compared to trying to stay as healthy as possible during her sickness. i pray she will get stronger as the days go by. pat has accomplished goals that will never be broken, at least in the womens game. good post, though !!

I pray that she does what is right and best for her health and her family. The rest is just a game. Her legacy is undebatable even if she never coaches another game. Of course, we all want to see her coaching and winning forever, but we want her to do what is best for her. That is the true love of a fan.

I too lost a parent to this crippling disease, and it is truly sad to witness the decline of Coach Summit. It may be that she chooses to spend as much "quality" time with her family as she can...while she can. She did more for women's basketball than than anyone, let alone the Lady Vols. Her legacy will never be surpassed in women's athletics.

Great post, couldn't agree more

I would love for her to stay but would not blame her one bit if she retired. There is no telling how long she has before she can't function with some resemblence of normalcy. She deserves to enjoy some time off before that happens.

Let her stay on until she hits 1100, then retire on that number. If Bobby knight can leave whenever he feels with no magic numbers near him, surely she can do that much.

One big key to Pat's remarkable success - everybody was required to give 100%, and if they couldn't, they came out. No excuses.

With all due respect to the person that started this thread, Pat shouldn't be coaching this season. Whoever talked her into staying around this year needs their azz handed to them.

It's not fair to Pat for her to be exposed over on the sidelines. The medicines available for Alzheimer's patients are much better now than they used to be as far as slowing down the disease, but they also can put the patient in a perpetually "dazed" state.

The people wanting her to stick around and coach obviously know very little about the disease. It's nothing more than selfishness.

I have another point too: It's plausible this disease has had a huge effect on the team over the last few years. There is no debate the quality of play from the Lady Vols has slipped the last few years. It's actually slipped to levels we've never seen from the Lady Vols. They're lucky to get into a final four now when it used to be the norm. Pat didn't just get this disease last summer. It's been coming on for awhile and it's likely it has taken its toll on her with little details not being tended to as they were in the past. The timeline with the Lady Vols slipping and Pat getting the disease are about the same.

This is the whole point: She may not know when it's time and she needs to be getting advice from people who understand the disease and have HER best interest at heart. Sure her record will be the best. She's the best ever in women's basketball and one of the best in all of basketball.

The worst thing our fanbase can do is to encourage her to continue coaching. It's beyond stupid

No, the point is..she may know. And, I believe she'll call it when it's time. The worst thing for our fan base and Pat, the team, etc. is VN "doctors".

Obviously, you know nothing about me. It's tiring in several threads seeing opinion posted as facts. Or, postured to be read or misunderstood as fact.

NO, the worst thing is for people than don't understand the disease to say things like "she'll know when it's time".

Quit trying to push her into an Alzheimer ward too soon. That's all I'm saying. I'm very familiar with the disease.

No one is trying to push her into the Alheimer's ward. For you to respond as you have, then NO, you don't understand the disease. Do you have any sort of idea the type of side effects the medicines can have on you?

It's not something that should be debated. She should retire immediately after this season. Anyone begging for her to stay should STFU

Yes, I do know a bit about this disease. I spent three years by my mother's side while she had this disease. Any more questions on this?

Also, for anyone wishing for her to stay, that's really just their opinion and doesn't or shouldn't call for an insult from you.

I stand by my opinion that Pat or those close to her will know when it is time. I think this may be her last season, but time will tell.

Knoxville, Tenn. (AP) - Pat Summit has signed a contract extension that will keep her at Tennessee through 2014, which would be her 40th season as Lady Volunteers head coach.

Summitt will make $1.4 million for the 2008-09 season. She will receive two lifetime achievement bonuses as part of the contract extension, a $500,000 bonus in 2009-2010 and a $1 million longevity bonus in 2013-14

Pat is "with" the team, she is certainly not coaching the team. Those salary numbers were controversial in the best of cirmcumstances. Anyone wishing for a reprise of this untenable situation next year is out of their mind.

And for anyone here trying to make points using their own family experience wrt dementia...please don't. Unless that loved one has been on the cover of SI a few times...and is currently pulling down 1.5 mil.

Pat is a lot stronger person than many think.

She is a very strong person as most around these parts (her home) know. Her legacy as a basketball coach would come into question before that does. Basically it never will.

That being said, it would not surprise me if she has to walk away from the game after this season.
