Coachery

As the saying goes, “there is proof in the pudding and Stoerner has been spot on with the pudding, so I think I speak for many when we say we will take his word and insight on whether or not Herman is on the list of possible candidates and go with your perspective of the 1% Franklin_Vol09. He’s been reliable and brought quality information on a topic that it’s very hard to find reliable information atm, Appreciate your insight Stoerner.

I don’t know him. I’m just saying. From what I do 100% know, is that very very few people know who has been contacted.
Zero chance that his connection has seen a “list” before the team has been even addressed. Zero chance he has seen a list since he has only been in town for 24 hours. As for the other info his source has brought, it seems correct.

Not being a jerk or anything, but ... ya think?

I’m sure you do. I’m just 99% positive that your guy hasn’t seen a list. I’ll leave out why and how I believe this.
There’s a top target, and five candidates. If making the list a figurative object is easier for you to handle, then do that. There is no literal list. They aren’t deciding who the targets are after getting approval from the team. I can state that with a great deal of confidence. I believe we have a coach, barring the inability to come to specific terms. I have more than one confirming source. I also know that they have a plan for what to do if things fall through, and what to do after that. As I said earlier, this search and hire will be tight and fast and free of embarrassment. It doesn’t begin today.

I agree with you mostly. Knowing who those coaching candidates are isn’t something that the top admin and new AD is going to do though.

It really feels like to me, that, we are turning the corner as a program. Sure, the football team has a ways to go, but from the top down, it seems like things are turning around. We didn't select an AD from the UT Good Ol Boy Network, and Boyd, Plowman, and White are going to get this done, done quickly, and done right!

I just started reading through several days worth of pages today.

Let me save you some time ...
1) Go to the search function
2) Type in Stoerner Fumbles
3) Click search
4) Start reading there

Dude has been spot on ... this has been nothing like the fiascos that have taken place on Volnation during previous AD, HC, or even assistant coaching hires.

Would be interesting if Hom Terman is involved.

By the way ... what can you tell us? Drop some info and enlighten us ... we are starving ... seriously.
I dont have the athletic dept connections I once did. I’m older.
I will say that I have business and political connections (I have to with what my company does). As for the day to day details and info that was about the football team specifically, I wouldn’t know or pretend to know.
If I had any info that was worth posting, I’d let you know.

Do you still believe in your opinion that Campbell is that top target or just one of the 5?

I’ve done my best to be the non-ambiguous guy. I’m about to shift a bit. Yesterday all the existing staff were reminded that the have NDA’s and that a coaching search is proprietary information. I’m sure this comes from the fact that the athletic department is gutted and there are no channels for discussing things with press. The last few pieces of news have made it to this board before they’ve gone to selected news outlets. The national sources that the university prefers are Feldman at CBS, and Lowe at ESPN. They’d like the news to go there first for maximum effect. Yesterday both were scooped by journalists reading the board. I have interrogated my friend three times today, and am stuck with a handful of magic beans. I don’t know enough to be of use. I think that will change as we get closer. So, I can share a few things I know, and one semi-cryptic answer that I think is helpful, but probably non-satisfactory. White arrives today. Will meet players. Will do press conference. Will talk to Steele. Will fly to meet a candidate, supposedly in a neutral location. I get the feeling we have a coach already from what I’ve heard. While UT could not walk the line of waiting for investigation results and officially looking for a coach, unofficially, they’ve been looking for awhile. In fact (here’s the cryptic part) My friend says White was recommended by our future coach. My friend was willing to share that we pursued five candidates, but not willing to share who. The five are impressive according to him. One is perceived as the top of the pyramid, and is probably the source of the big number discussed. I read that to be Campbell, but that’s a guess. I know, and previously stated that Frost has a relationship with the chancellor and spoke to her. I have no information that he’s the coach. Given Nebraska is his alma mater, that doesn’t make sense, but I have no information to rule it out. I mentioned that board buzz says we’ll hire a seated coach, past chancellor commentary would rule out Kiffin and Freeze, and that it would have to be someone experienced. He said there’s one candidate that is down the list that would be a “bend” of that criteria. Maybe that’s Kiffin. In the past I’ve asked the chance of Freeze, and he said “zero”. I know that the plan has contingencies down far below the chosen five. We will not be embarrassed by public rejection, a long search, or dumb moves. This is going to be tight and fast. My friend rated the odds at 90% that we currently have our guy, and it will be official by next week. On a slightly sad note, Tee and Jay have missed several job opportunities to hold the team together. They’ve received very little communication or support on what happens next. The two of them have been rock solid through this whole mess. Yesterday they saved two players from the portal based on rallying them around the White news. I’m sorry I’m pushing soft journalism today. I’ve tried to give good data before. I just don’t have the goods today. I’m not even confident that my conclusions are right from my guessing game this morning. Like I said, I think some things will loosen up, and I’ll hear more. One final note: My friend said the White family is like the Kennedy family of the NCAA. They’re royalty. Kevin White is one of the most respected names in a mature athletics. He was a hero at Notre Dame and Duke and served on the Olympics board. The integrity of that name will be very important. That’s very good news.
Dont apologize for squat. Your info has been amazing. Thank you.

Been wavering all day.

If we snag Campbell I'll go full Posi-Vol for the first time in ages. My God, what a dream hire that would be. It's THE guy that could get the job done. Chadwell, Napier, Kiffin would all be great also but to get the top choice I've been championing since we didn't hire him in 2017 would be off the charts.

Why would Scott Frost help Tennessee with an AD hire?

Our chancellor knows him, and trusts him.

I hope this does not come true.

I don’t think he would come unless it were a Co-hc type of deal. I’m just thinking that there will be a large plot twist that explains the timing of all this. My wet dream goes like this, Cutcliffe Co-HC Peyton Manning Co-Hc with Eli Manning QB coach and Arch Manning winning 3 NC’s in a row to send Cutcliffe off into the sunset and Peyton primed as HC. I know call me crazy but it’s my wet dream lol

In the words of Jack Sparrow, “You need a girl, mate!”

No one needs to be smug and sure about the security of information in an athletic department being tightly held.

Consider this...

I am now retired from a company (now out of business due to Covid) that for many years UT used to fly football coaches and administrators.

When Butch Jones hired Charlton Warren (a prince of a guy) my copilot and I flew to Charlotte and picked up Charlton and brought him to Knoxville for a press conference where Jones would introduce him to members of the media.

A day or two later, Bob Welton (another good guy) called us. It was a conference call with me, a company VP and the company owner. Bob said,”Coach wants someone (at your company) fired.”

The three of us were just stunned. What???This is highly irregular for ANYONE from UT or any other company to expect us to fire one or more of our employees.

The arrogance and audacity of Jones to do this was shocking to all three of us.

And he didn’t have the backbone to call himself. He had Bob do it, and I could tell Bob did so with chagrin.

So we asked Bob why Jones wanted us to fire our employees. Bob Welton said that Jones claimed that one or both pilots leaked the news of the Charlton Warren hire to a reporter.

The reporter subsequently put a story out about the hire before the press conference occurred, and it was Jones’ belief that only three people inside the football offices knew of the hire, Bob Welton, Jones himself and a third man, whose name I don’t remember, but, like Bob Welton, had come from Cincinnati with Jones to UT.

According to Bob Welton, Jones considered Bob and the other guy to be loyal and he trusted them to not leak the news, and the three of them were the only people in the department who knew of the hire.

So, we then asked Bob Welton why Jones thought that our employees should be fired. (At this point in the meeting, the owner, who lived in Chattanooga and the VP, who lived in South Carolina, neither of whom are from Tennessee nor do they follow football and could not give a rat’s tail that Jones was the head football coach at UT) were growing angry at the arrogance and audacity of Jones’s expectation.

I then asked Bob why does Jones think the pilots leak the name of the new hire? He said that Jones called a Mike Griffith (or Griffin) sp? a reporter and asked Mike his source. Bob said that Jones said that Mike G., the reporter, said he learned it from “the pilot.”

And I said that there were two pilots on that trip and I was the captain, and I didn’t leak it to anyone, much less this reporter, whom I do not know.

The owner then asked me if I thought the co-pilot leaked it, and I responded, “absolutely not!” Furthermore, Jones is rather naive to think that any reporter is going to reveal a source. The reporter was just lying to Jones.

The owner said that in situations such as this he ascribed to the Occam’s Razor theory and told Bob that Jones should look at those around him, because no one at our company gives a $&@? about who he wants hire.

It was evident to the three of us that Jones had been overwhelmed by the pressures of his job and also by his own ego, so we just dismissed it and went on with our business.

Of course, people talk and UT employees both inside UTAD and the administration had indicated that Jones’ behavior was growing more “obnoxious by the day,” as one person put it.
Epilogue

The next day I called the copilot who flew with me on that trip and told him about the phone call from Bob Welton. I told him that when I was asked if he would have leaked the news of the hire to anyone, I said absolutely not. Of course he said he did not, but he related something interesting.

After we had returned from the trip to pick up Charlton, he went to Knox Catholic to watch his son play in a basketball game and John Jancek sat down beside him and ask if we had had a good flight today, referring to the heavy fog conditions. John said he knew we went to Charlotte and back because he had asked one of the girls in the office where we were going and she told him.

Well, so much for no one but Jones, Bob Welton and the third guy knowing about trip to Charlotte to pick up Charlton Warren. I never have learned who leaked the information.

Probably got it leaked from Haslam, owner of Pilot travel centers
