The triple option is a deal with the devil
You can use it to routinely win about 8 games a year. Decent, not great. Maybe you get lucky occasionally and take down a great team. This is what GT did .
The catch-when you go away from it, your program is trash for a decade. Basically like coming back from the "death penalty". You have few if any players capable of execution of a traditional offense at a high level. Your recruiting is gonna suffer as the big time recruits (at QB and wr) still remember you running the triple option. You basically have to start from scratch. This is what GT is going through right now
Just saying it was something you purchase not debating how effective it was. I did think it was perfect for GT because their chances of getting 5 star players and running a pro style offense are limited due to their entrance requirements.
GT has a pretty impressive football history (Heisman; Dodd; 4 national Championships) to just boot them out of the ACC because they have sucked for a decade or two. They have also had some good basketball and baseball teams in the past.I'm not disagreeing with you. Personally, I believe that if Duke, Vandy, and historically Wake really wanted to have decent seasons each year they would run the triple option full time. I would also lump GT in there.
They do not. Why?
Coaches -opposing ones-hate it. The system messes with your game planning. Especially if you have to face a school running it well in the middle of the season
Word on the street is that the other ACC coaches and hence ADs were getting mad at Tech for running it. Face it, Tech offers nothing except it's location. They were good before and decent in the 90s but they have pretty much sucked for decades. If the school was in Macon, they would be in the Sun Belt by this point. That is reality. Duke-and occasionally Wake have basketball going for them. Vandy at least has baseball
Nope Tech is smack dab in the middle of Atlanta and have an outsized reputation amongst employers. That is the only reason they are still in the ACC. Move the campus and they would probably be relegated by this point.

No reason that GT can’t be competitive in baseball and basketball similar to Vandy and Wake with the right coaches. A guy like Cutcliffe might even have some football success. I like it when schools with an academic focus can also play some ball!
If you were there with Varitek, we graduated about the same time - for me it was the summer of the Olympics.Well aware amigo. Went to high school with one one of Dodds granddaughters.
Tech was ok up until about 2000 in most sports. Honestly, I'm not sure what happened after O'Leary and Bobby Cremmins left both programs kind of went into the wilderness for about 5 years until they hired Paul Johnson.
Tech "should" be better in baseball than they are. They have quite the history really. Knew Varitek and Nomar well when I was in school there.. Kevin Brown was a few years ahead of me but front what I hear was a very decent student (like Dobbs level).
