This month's Basketball Times has Clark Francis' annual rankings of coaches. Pearl checks in at #24, while Tony Jones is #17 and Steve Forbes #49 among assistants. I certainly don't endorse anything Francis has to say, but if BT thinks it's worth printing, it's worth discussing.

Tony Jone's is one heck of a coach. Don't think he will be wearing the Orange for much longer.

Is the ranking limited to bench-coaching acumen? If so, then I have no beef with it.

This is kinda fun: Assume that you are an AD of a hypothetical university that is about to start a basketball program. You can hire any coach. Make your list.

Pearl is higher than #24 on my list, but probably not much higher (I haven't actually assembled this list). Calipari is at the top of my list.

If we make the hypothetical even more hypothetical and assume that we can hire coaches at a previous age, I'd take a 15-years-younger Pitino over any coach in history.

Since Francis is a recruiting guy, I assume there's a huge component of his ranking assigned to player procurement.

In my opinion, having Calipari as the best coach in the country is laughable, and greatly demeans the credibility of this list. The best coach in the country would have went farther in the tourny with that roster than the elite 8. Kentucky was hands down the best team in the country this year and should have won the NC. Calipari isn't even top 5.

Take a stab. Who are your 5?

Izzo, Huggins, Boeheim, Coach K, Roy Williams is a good starting point.

Izzo has got to be close to #1. How can Calipari be number 1. He hasn't won a NC. He has never really "coached"...

That #1 spot would have to be between..

IZZO
COACH K
SELF
Maybe, WILLIAMS?

I'll take Roy Williams over Bill Self every day of the week.
