I am about convinced at this point that a flat tax rate, with, say, a $25,000 per person exemption, is in order. The tax system in this country is being abused by both the left and the right to reward their own constituencies and it has become its own monster.

STOP THE PRESSES!

lawgator and I agree 100% on something.

that's why i suggest merging it into wealthfare. or even if we merle eliminated it for anyone making over $100K a year or anyone with over $1 mil in liquid net worth we would significantly decrease the burden on the young.

his lung surgery must have been on your mind, eh?

or the fact they were constantly under attack by forces that were bigger than them.
not so much. They continued to push the kingdom larger and larger, which took more forces and the frictional expense of welfare and conscriptions broke them. The empire could have funded its military if its populace had continued its advancement and productivity. However, the fat, lazy and state ward mentality ended all of that.

The USofA is following a very similar, and predictable, path.

I'm not trying to be a doomsday type, just pointing out civilization life cycle similarities.

No, I see a lot of similarities too. But to say Rome bankrupted itself and not the fact they got overrun by arguably the greatest conqueror of all time is a bit much. Rome since its beginning used conscripts to fight the majority of their wars and only relied on their own troops when desperately needed. The Roman empire also contracted quite a bit (and moved) in its last hundred years.

Alexander the Great and the Romans were each bankrupt in the end due to the massive expansion of their empires beyond the ability of the gov't to continue to fund people and war. Full coffers would have seen each rule for even more centuries.

Alexander was before the Roman Empire and his failure was the fact there was no plan for his demise, or lack of government.

The Roman Empire was overran by the Mongols, with help from every old enemy Rome had Gauls, Visigoths, etc... and the best government they ever had stood no chance against them.

you act as if I don't know history of warfare or Western Civ, when I know that you know that I took History of the Military Art and Western Civ at a better school than you.:)

I used them as examples of great civilizations.

one would hope that an Army school would teach better land warfare classes than a Navy school, but how would I know if you paid any attention in class? :p

I agree as far as the richest receiving social security...but the majority of people receiving social security really need it to live.

According to the fine print on my retirement statement, Social Security will be bankrupt in 2046 unless something changes.

I swear I did not make that up. It's on there.

I'll try to find the link again but I read a study that stated the US would need a tax rate of almost 70% to maintain SS at the current levels. Eventually someone has to step on the third rail

It can be fixed, but that would require congress to undo what they have done. SS would be fine right now if congress did not get their hands on it and started using it for other means.

obama will take full credit for the incoming cyclical economic recovery

Man, come on.......you guys already used that one when Clinton was in office. Sooner or later, you all are going to have to realize that it is not a fluke. :)

yeah clinton was the one who created the internet and held interest rates at the lowest in 40 years. bush on the other hand killed the internet and the housing industry.

obama will take full credit for the incoming cyclical economic recovery. that might save him. otherwise he's a 1 termer. I'll support him as long as he doesn't try to put through his social programs. Programs that could bancrupt my grandchildren like medicare, social security, and welfare have killed this country.

Why not he going to get the credit if it fails. It is understandable that a Rep cannot spell Bankrupt. LOL
