Good question! Here's my theory...Right now you have a club of "have's and have not's". I believe the 4 team playoff has narrowed the club of "have's" to about 6-8 teams...Bama, Clemson, OSt, OK, Notre Dame, LSU, UGA, etc. These teams, on any given 3 year period, are in the playoffs at least once if not more. This allows teams to recruit at a higher level with a vision of continued success. Everyone else is dealing with left overs in recruiting. I think it's BAD for college football...folks are tired of having the NC be a foregone conclusion for Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, etc, with a one off like Auburn or LSU every few years, when the stars align. I believe the solution is to expand to 8 team playoff, which expands the 6-8 teams in the 4 team threshold to 10-12 teams...or more...also, knowing there will be some upsets in there, just like happens in bball. Eliminate the December dead period, and have first games be home games to highest rank and let bowl games play out from there. I'm sure some smart people could figure out how to make it work.In college basketball, teams from all parts of the country are good. North, Northeast, South, West, Midwest, East, etc most all conferences are represented and play well in the field of 68. The competition is terrific for the most part.
College Football, on the other hand, is mostly relevant and dominated by the South, with the exception of Ohio state (sometimes Oklahoma).
My question is why? Why the major discrepancy in regional success between the two major college sports?
