Saban was also 72. It isn't like he retired in the prime of his coaching career. He was speculated to be retiring each year for the previous like 4-5 years.

The recruits he gets are college ready compared to the herds of not college ready guys that go to other programs. Nuance, nuance, nuance.

they had 2 freshman starters this year. and 1 freshman last year.

it looks like there were 2 other first or second year guys in their 2 deep.

thats hardly enough to think he is recruiting more college ready guys than anyone else.

The coaches have been doing it for years, they were the pigs first.

If we’re looking for root causes I would think fans demanding championships on shorter and shorter timeframes is a significant factor. It’s the bed we’ve made for ourselves.

He was very active in recruiting prospective transfers from other rosters even before there was a portal. Yes, he does come across as a hypocrite now.

Whether from over-signing or helping recently fired coaches from rival schools circumvent their buyout obligations, by hiring them as "analysts," Saban was always about manipulating rules. It's only now that there basically are no rules that he is resentful of the system, that he could no longer abuse to his advantage.

I think he retired mostly because he was 72, personally. The game is always evolving. The Portal is a pretty big evolution, but the game is always changing. If he was 42 or 52, he probably has the energy to deal with it. He'd been around forever and had achieved everything there was to achieve. Nothing left to prove. I just don't think he had the desire or the energy to clear the next hurdle.

To be honest, the re-recruiting of your own roster every year would be absolutely exhausting regardless of your age or energy level. I don't blame any coach who taps out for that reason. Professional coaches don't even have to do that.

...and a huge reason for fans doing that is because of what Saban did at Alabama. "He's able to do that. Why can't my coach?"

I really think it was the combo, portal and NIL.

I feel like if one had happened, got settled down, coaches got used to it; and then the other happened, it wouldn't have been so bad.

There are, however, the quality of football played at Burke-Tarr Stadium isn't quite like it is at Neyland so I'm not sure ESPN will be offering the...... ??? South Atlantic Conference???..... a few billion to televise their games.

I didn't say it was going to be easy, which is why most of this bellyaching about how college football is pretty much just noise. The ones complaining will still watch on TV, still go to games, still buy merchandise and everyone making money will still make money and have zero incentive to change.

I'm not saying it shouldn't, I'm more taking aim at the ones who are being old men yelling at the sky about it; if it's so terrible there's nobody forcing you to watch or support it.
