You had a DUMB DB coach!!!!
no on second thought you had a STUPID DB coach.

Nope that's how it's always been taught.....put your helmet on the ball and when you tackle you're supposed to put the top rivets on your facemask where you want to hit and wrap up but don't let that be mistaken with leading with the top of your head, just the facemask

There is a huge difference between leading with your forhead and facemask vs. The top of your head. Plus helmet to helmet is far worse than helmet to body or shoulder pads.
Just be agile hostile and mobile. Hit them with all you got with your head up and your eyes on them. If you drop your head and are looking down you are at risk!

Don't confuse them with the facts. These tough guys can handle a fractured neck or concussion.

Never lead with your head. Pretty sure that's the first thing they teach in pee wee.

I guess you never played. You are taught to lead with the head, face up (never EVER lead with your crown) and place head to one side of the target and shoulder pad to the other.

But yes, you are leading with your head.

I don't care where he played. If any coach teaches players to lead with their head they are stupid and should not be allowed to coach period.

Stop being an idiot.

You obviously never played the game.

After reading this whole thread I think it got into an argument cause some people were saying leading with ur helmet and some took it as leading with the crown and not face mask. Just a thought...

Anyway, I think the problem is that defensive players are getting called when they have already committed and the offensive player changes there body position and frankly its to late. Its really a discretion call by the ref and the offensive player gets the benefit of the doubt.

Bad tackling is an epidemic nationwide imo. People put blame on the college coaches for things that need to be taught before getting to college. Throw in the mix of kids not being taught properly, thinking they can just knock them down with a hit like they did in HS or to make the ESPN highlight reel, and with the new campaign of trying to make the game safe its no surprise tackling is such a problem in todays game.

Just all imho that's all...

When I first started playing, I was taught to put my face mask into the center of the chest and wrap up. With all these rule changes over the years, football is becoming a sissy sport., especially the NFL.

Prevention of concussive brain damage, prevention of post-concussion syndrome, prevention of early-onset dementia due to a chronic concussive state, prevention of loss of cognitive function... Yeah, damn sissies. They're ruining the game.

We play on Soddy Daisys football field every saturday at 12pm.....feel free to come by and show us "The right way to tackle".

No one from Soddy should talk football skills or fundamentals. Even Weathers couldn't coach that team out of the locker room without a player running the wrong way.

stupid rule change...

I understand penalties for spearing, or launching yourself at a defenseless player, but helmet to helmet happens all the time, unintentionally.

MANY of us were taught to lead with the helmet back in the day. It was standard. Yes the rules have changed but that doesn't mean those coaches who taught us were stupid. It was taught in order to break up the play. To generalized all those coaches is more STUPID than anything else. In today's game players just have to adapt.

Putting your facemask in their chest is not leading with you head. Leading with your head would be more like a spear which could break your neck.
Leading with the helmet at an angle and driving thru with the shoulder is leading with the helmet. A spear IS the top of the crown of the helmet that causes head and neck injuries. A spear and leading with the head were always separate.

that's funny, should've played when price was coaching. All we did was go to playoffs and beat Red Bank

I was there for the beginning of the Price years, my brother was there when he bolted for greener pastures. A little success is just that: a little success. Unfortunately, it doesn't change the historical perspective that SD has traditionally not been a stellar football school. Almost everything else there has made it to contender status on a consistent basis but football, and thus it will ever be.

You know, looking back on it, Price was to SD what Franklin is to Vandy. Hrm.
