moving to a condo and have to give up my direct tv:frown: must choose between at&t u-verse and Comcast xfinity. will be bundling tv, internet, and home phone. down load speed on internet is the major difference: 12 mbps on at&t and 75 mbps on Comcast. will be getting whole home dvr.
anyone have opinions on this? I know Comcast service is suspect, but the internet speed thing has me concerned. I don't game or watch movies via internet so maybe I shouldn't be.
thanks

Are you sure that at&t Uverse speed is accurate? 12mbps seems really slow. I'd probably go Comcast if that number is, in fact, correct.

Is it just you or you sharing the connection with family/roommates?

If you don't game or stream movies via netflix or similar programs, go with whatever package is cheaper.

UVerse sucks. I had Clear at one point and they were the best. Fixin to drop UVerse and try something else.

Are you sure 12 Mbps is correct? If so, I hope you don't like streaming because you're not going to be doing much at all.

I have Comcast (75 Mbps). Speed is perfectly fine, even for streaming. However, their customer service S-U-C-K-S!!! Haven't cared for DSL so I'd lean toward Comcast knowing that speed most likely won't be an issue but customer service doesn't really exist.

I'm waiting on 1 GB fiber then I'm leaving Comcast.

I agree with Comcast. We've had their Internet a long time and never had any issues. But yes... if you have to call them their customer service is suspect. In terms of download speed, even though you may not stream now you likely will down the road. Being able to watch football, basketball, baseball, the lady vols, etc. is a nice convenience.

Uverse is terrible. Mine was slow and extremely unreliable. It dropped constantly. I have Comcast now and like it much better.

Comcast doesnt charge for usage either like alot of them do - I hate the customer service though as well as all the hidden fees (like every kind of tax possible that runs up the bill) I only watch sports so the extra cable channels are worthless to me, but they are the only ones that offer the SEC N and unfortunately its in the highest priced channel package in my area

In Knoxville they have data caps, but I have no idea what the overage charges are. Nevertheless, if you live in Knoxville and watch a lot of Netflix, you probably want avoid Comcast.

If they ever do get data caps where I am - they are out with me - there is a new fiber company almost finished with the underground wiring but they have data caps, so keeping Comcast until/if it happens - data caps are a rip off

12 Mbps is possibly accurate depending on the area he is and how far away from the CO he is located.

Just for reference. I currently have DSL 10 Mbps. Mainly because of cost and I'm grandfathered into a really good deal. I stream Netflix, watch ESPN, movie HD, cartoon HD, have a chrome cast, and a security camera with cloud backup running on mine. No issues with streaming here.

People put way to much into the download speeds. Many more factors at play.

All of this. I've had U-Verse before and had no complaints with similar requirements.

On the subject of caps...everyone has a data cap. Comcast's cap goes to 1TB/month starting in June.

I had U-Verse in a similar area to where Nerd is now.

I have 6mps with Uverse and it works fine. I stream and play Xbox with no problems.

12mbs isn't terrible unless you have multiple people using it at once to stream, game, etc. I believe HD Netflx streams only require around 5mbs. The 4k streams require around 25mbs though.

wow 12 mgb? damn I wished :) I'm out in the sticks and DSL thru the phone line is all that is available,on a good day I pull 3.1mgb :) and it actually does everything I need,I turned off direct TV last July or August and I haven't missed a ball game or TV show that I wanted to see,I'm using a desk top computer and 1 TV

I don't use Net Flix,I'm using another one that is a free, you just for to have your shields up and an add blocker, but my computer is a refurbished HP,so if it croaks no big deal, with what I save on the TV bill,if I had to,I could buy one of these about every 2 months,I don't game, just music and TV

and no I don't miss that 80 to 90 buck Direct TV monthly bill at all :)

well I'm thinking I will select Comcast xfinity over at&t u-verse. I'm going to select the package that can be cancelled at any time without any penalty cost. it will be a little higher cost but a significant reduction over my current cost for direct tv and dsl/phone thru t.d.s.
if it sucks or customer service is non-existent, I will change to u-verse.
there two reasons:
1. the condo currently has Comcast installed and the owner likes it fine. the higher speed might be important.

2. it seems since at&t acquired direct tv, they are backing off their commitment to cable. any upgrades would be minimal in the future.
I'm going to be a settler I suppose.
thanks for everyone's input.

Your second bullet point is a good one. With the purchase of dtv they aren't going to be putting in as much money into u-verse. However, they won't let it fall by the wayside either as it uses existing lines that are paid for. So it's essentially high profit low expense for them.

The purchase of dtv gives them a different avenues into hurting cable since they can eventually "bundle" dtv and their wireless product in an area that their existing TV service and phone couldn't reach.

I went back to Comcast after a while of AT&T, personally I think AT&T does better with actual television, but even with the enhanced internet package the UVerse lags behind. Using the old copper pairs just doesn't do the job

My apologies for interrupting the thread, but TP, please check your email.

Oh, and I have Uverse and have lots less problems than I had with charter.
