I thought I would turn to my vol faithful for help.

My laptop acer just suddenly stopped connecting to wireless internet. I have tried plugging the cable directly in and still no luck. I am not a computer guy so please excuse the vagueness of my problem. Any suggestions for something for me to try would be appreciated.
thanks!

Try unplugging your router for about three minutes and letting it reset.

Wow two responses already. Y'all are great!

Yeah its on and I did try unplugging it. I have used other computers on my wireless so I know its the computer that's the problem.

If other computers are still receiving the wireless signal fine and your laptop was, too, and then quit, could be the wireless card in the laptop failed.

My laptop has a tiny button on the front corner of the case that turns the wireless on and off. Sometimes, I have accidentally push the button and turned it off. Simple, but worth a check.

is the Acer picking up the network availability and not connecting or is it not even picking up the network? I'm trying to eliminate some problems to make this easier.

Slydell, there is not a button on the front and after doing some reading the wireless card thing sounds like a possibility.

Volfanbill, it says that I have a excellent connection.

Thanks for the ideas guys please keep them coming this is so frustrating.

Sounds like you may be connected. But, when you open a browser, it says no connection, right?

If so, there are 3 possibilities.

1. Proxy settings enabled in your browser.
2. Work offline is checked.
3. Firewall not allowing browser pass through.

Check something for me.

Start->run
Type cmd
Hit enter
Command prompt should be up.
Type ping yahoo.com
Hit enter
Give me read out

You did it right. You aren't connected, but you are seeing the network in the list of networks to connect to, right?

So the card is working, if it is finding the network. Does a yellow exclamation pop up that says "Limited or no connectivity" ?

If so, does your network have a passkey or phrase? If it is a white netgear router, that key would be on the bottom.

If linksys, other or different netgear, you would have had to manually set it up.

Let me know.

Hm. You are connected to the router, but the router not so much to the internet.

Open up your browser and in address bar, type:
http://192.168.0.1/

That should take you to login screen for d-link router. Log in, find a "status" tab, or similar, and see if shows a good IP.

If that IP is bad, right click on the network icon in status bar, and go to "Networks and Connections," and in there, should be a "Properties" button for your network.

Click that, and give me IP info. Should be 192.168.1.100 or similar.

I'm not knowledgeable on this kind of stuff, but I had a similar problem with my old laptop. I was having the exact same problem and it ended up being one box being unchecked in the TCP/IP menu of my network settings. Sorry it's vague, but maybe fl0at knows what I'm talking about and if it's relevant. Good luck!

Yea. I'm trying to walk you to your router's IP address. Did you do the other thing?

Router IPs range. Generally they are 192.168.1.1

But I've seen d-link with 0.1, some with 0.100, and the like.

Just do start>run
Type cmd
Hit enter
Type ipconfig /all
Hit enter

Give me gateway IP for your wlan0

Also, type that address into address bar, see if it pulls login for router

Very relevent. It is #1 on my list, but I want to make sure his router is connecting before I do that. I've had D-link's drop connections before.

it says default gateway 192.168.0.1
is that what you need?

Ok. Let's uncheck detect settings automatically, and proxy.

Start>control panel>network and internet (or whatever)>I think it is status>then bottom.

I'm not home, so I can't give full sequence.

Alternatively, open internet explorer, find options/preferences, and then one of the tabs will have

Automatically detect settings, and connect via proxy.

Uncheck both

I think I am where I should be but I can not find where to uncheck.
I am in Internet Properties with the tabs General, security, privacy, content, connections, programs and advance. Does that sound like where I should be?

Connections then LAN settings may take you to the proxy check box.

thanks vollygirl, I found it.

float, both were already unchecked

Alright. We now have two options. One, test the router. Two, log into router.

To bypass router, and see if it is the issue, you can do two things.

Disconnect router from modem. The router and modem are connected by a lan cable. Remove lan cable from router and plug into lan port on computer. The one from modem can be traced back, but easier to just grab the one plugged into the port not labeled 1,2,3 or 4, but labeled LAN or WAN.

Then, once plugged into computer, do a 1 min restart on your modem.n just pull the plug and go away for a min. Come back and plug in.

Connected to net now?
