Have you tried kicking it? Like... Jet Li style hammer kick right on top of it?

In the right and corner of windows, you should see a network icon. It looks like this:

xp-network-icon-rtclick.gif

Right click on that, and go to Status. What does it say?

Then go to Open Network Connections. Do you see Local Area Network. Is it enabled? If not, right click and enable. Then right click and chose properties.

You should see something like this, after you select TCP/IP and Click Properties

w2knet08.gif

Are they both checked as obtain automatically?

If so:

Load back command prompt

Start->Run
Cmd

type ipconfig /release
Hit enter
type ipconfig /renew
hit enter

Can you connect now, using just the modem?

If all of that fails, in Internet Explorer click File and see if "Work Offline" is checked.

If it isn't... it may be a modem issue. Which means, time to call Charter or Comcast

I'm off for the evening. Hopefully one of those things is the issue. I'll check back in in about 2.5 hrs, depending on movie length.

1. The status says connected
2. Local area network is enabled
3. In the (TCP/IP) the top one was checked but the bottom one was on the "Use the following DNS server addresses". I changed it and followed your directions and I still got the same "cannot display the webpage"
4. work offline is not checked

I do not think it is a modem issue because I am using it now with a notebook and my phone. A few weeks ago I was using this laptop to stream a college baseball game and it stopped and I have not been able to get it back up since. I have even taken the laptop to other locations to log in and still get "cannot display webpage" even when it tells me I have a good signal.
thanks for staying with me on this.

Alrighty. So it is specifically the computer. Both cabeled and WiFi.

But not proxy, not DNS, not DHCP. Did you do the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew in command prompt?

I had a similar problem and eventually resorted to doing a system restore. I went through the trouble shooting and then the Geek Squad said I needed a new wireless card. Since it was a 2nd computer I didn't want to put $$ into it. Works perfectly now.

Float seems to think it is not the wireless card because it is picking up the network's signal which makes sense.

You can try a system restore, as volmanbill suggests. If it is viral related, or a modified registry, that could solve the problem.

Could always try putting Malware Bytes on a thumb drive and install and do a scan.

Try this at some point, as well:

Open Internet Explorer.
Click on Tools and Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Click on the Reset button.

Follow the directions, OKing through them all.

Hey Float, if you don't mind

I'm in medical school. But, I've fractured the occasional law or two with a computer. It is a hobby.

I'm much better when I'm actually at the keyboard, but you'll have to take my word for it, since I can't seem to fix Merlin's box. gigity.

I'm not going to steal fl0at's thunder, but he's right, or at least 98% right. I don't see how it could possibly be the network card. This is "layer 1", aka user/setting related. System restore could bring it back, but I'd go with running an up to date Malware Bytes or Spybot. or both even.

Are you sure everything's ok with your DNS settings?

He said his DNS weren't set to obtain automatically. If he is sitting on an office network, he might need to set them manually... but he would likely need to set IP and gateway manually as well.

Of course, it could have been manual DNS like Google's free DNS.

Dunno, should have told him to reboot after changing to automatic.

Just an overall weird problem. I think your suggestion to do a system restore would be a viable option. But, I would definitely do a malware scan prior, just to stay on the safe side.

a lot of times you can maintain the setting for obtaining the IP address automatically even if you have a manually set DNS server.

Just to try it, he could set up Google's DNS server. Primary would be 8.8.8.8 and Secondary is 8.8.4.4

You can actually enter those in either order, but it would be worth the two minutes just to try. If it works, it really won't hurt to keep those numbers or he would just need to find out what the DNS settings are supposed to be. His provider should be able to give him that info.

Merlin you got this figured out yet? If not I had the same problem with a new laptop. What I had to do and I'm running windows7, not that it matters, was clear out my wireless network places and re add the network I was trying to connect to.

In Windows7: Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Manage Wireless Networks (left side menu)

I manually deleted all networks then re added my home network. Hope this helps and good luck.
