Concern meter?

I feel Pruitt completely mismanaged this situation, and may have under estimated things. There weren't solid backup plans. Yeah, I'm concerned and hope this isn't indicative of Pruitt's approach to other aspects of being a first time head coach.

How do you create initial and backup plans in the amount of time CJP had? It appears that most of the clueless so called fans on this site have lost sight of the fact that three weeks of his time here included a little thing known as the "dead period" in which there can be no contact with recruits initiated by the coach. He was trying to get players that had not even heard of us to at least consider us. Quit whining!

Only two guys that we missed on that worry me a bit are Glenn Beal and Jordan Young. Both of those are guys who we seemed to be in on, were not "swing for the fences" type players, and who both signed with new coaches also coming in short-timed like Pruitt & Co. were. Not sure what happened with either, and A&M has historically been able to pull kids from Louisiana, but those were two I thought we should have gotten. Copeland, Griffin, Walker, those guys were always going to be long shots.

Next year will go a long way to finding out what we have. Expectations on the field are so low for this team that a 7-5 record could really give Pruitt some momentum and we could have a top 10 class.

As far as I know, the only committed players we lost were Jordan Young and Anthony Grant. All the rest were targets that did not even have us on their radar prior to CJP approaching them.

This is true. Early signing period went better than expected and some hopes on here became unrealistic. Then VN goes into freak out mode.

Honestly, and I mean honestly what does Tennessee have to offer over Bama, UF, Georgia, Auburn, etc. We've sucked forever or been at best mediocre, multiple coaches, multiple disgruntled, misused former players, a first year, first time head coach.

Mullen is a first year coach at UF but he has a resume as a HC, and in state talent. Saban and Smart were in the NT game. Auburn beat both of the teams in the National title. What has Pruitt done as a HC?

I think given the timing, public perception, and the negatives he did a pretty fair job and actually swung for the fences. With more time maybe this becomes a top five class.

I doubt our coaches are saying today was fine or that they're not concerned. I'm sure they had higher aspirations for this class and I hope they're both disappointed and determined-- disappointed that we didn't fill all our needs and determined to develop the players we have to overachieve. Being concerned about something is a step toward fixing it-- and that's a positive.

Can you imagine how hard it is to recruit a kid after your team went 4-8 last year? How about this: “do you want to go 6-6 the next few years or play for championships?” We need to catch lightning in a bottle fast if we’re gonna put the past decade of disappointment out of people’s minds.

We're already looking forward to the 2019 class and hoping for a lot better results than we got today. But don't forget CJP talked early about coaching the ones who come and not worrying about the ones who don't. Let's settle for that right now. Because looking back at the 2017 season we got drilled by several teams not nearly was talented as we were. But they were more motivated, better trained, and well coached. That's where we have to look now. That's where we'll win now. There's plenty of talent on our roster and there's good talent coming in this, 2018, class. Now it's up to CJP and his staff to coach, train, and win!! GBO!!

Top 15 is about right for next year. Expecting more doesn't reflect a good understanding of where this program is. Tennessee fans have been living in fantasy land far too long. Time we come around to reality, even if it isn't where we want to be.

Top 15?????? Good God our expectations have sunk to new lows.

Top 15 next year will be a gigantic failure. Pruitt MUST have a Top 5 to have a punchers chance in this league. Unless, of course, we've just decided to say "screw it! Let's tailgate".

Agree, we need our QB to perform well and stay healthy or it could be a very very long season.

There is a difference in having concern, and outright panic and hitting the eject button.

If you are trying to convince yourself you aren't the slightest bit concerned after the momentum we allegedly had going into the final weekend, then you probably aren't being honest with yourself.

There is nothing wrong with being concerned at this point.

Or maybe we just didn't believe this momentum in the first place and therefore aren't surprised by today? Look, this is how 0-8 teams in their conference typically recruit. Having a coach without prior experience to sell didn't help.

I'm in that camp. Never thought we would land top 15 class this year. Too much going against us right now.

Pruitt has to prove he can coach and win some big games first and not lose the ones he shouldn't.

Pruitt had literally a month. That's no where near enough time. It was an act of god that we got the kids to visit. I expected no different than what has happened today.

He should have had more than a month if not for: 1) our inept athletic department keeping Butch way too long; 2) the botched coach search; and 2) some blame for Pruitt and Fulmer here for Pruit staying at bama.

My concern level for this recruiting class? Absolutely zero. But then again, I not one who has insane, unrealistic expectations. Given the unique situation CJP was in with the early signing period, our worst season in modern history and coaching in the playoffs, this class is fine.

What did Butch have when he got hired? Didn't affect him this bad.

I don't think he did any better on his first class either did he? When Pruitt was hired, this is honestly about what I expected. Then he overachieved in the ESP, and I think it got our hopes up that he was a "magic man". Reality bites tho.

If we don't crack solidly into the top 10 next year with a year to sell playing time, then I'm going to start worrying.

Of course, we still have a season to play too. If we test new levels of the lower end of our worst record ever, then watch out. The wheels may come off this thing early. :eek:hmy:

One + I'm hanging onto. 17' was originally(last off season) thot to be a bit of a rebuild. 18' was the season to challenge for a title. At least based on the roster progressions. The cupboard is not bare. If the guy can oversee a program and develop an offense, then maybe we could win respectably in 18'.

The early signing period is a disaster for a new head coach. It had to be difficult to recover from the cluster of a coaching search and the W/L record we had. We were lucky to get the kids we did sign this year and end at #20. Next year is a top 10.

Another way to look at this... as of right now, it's fully on to basketball season and we are rolling! :crossfingers:
