Concerns after second viewing - not NegaVoling

On several of those 3 and outs the coaches seemed to be running some different things like a practice. When your up 17 and the defense is pitching a shutout you can play around. My only regret is not letting Peterman run the full play book. Hope Worley stays healthy this year!

Way too many false starts and other penalties. Kept Vols behind the sticks on several first half possessions.

First game with an entirely new line. If you weren't expecting struggles running the ball and mishaps, that's on you. They will continue to improve.

Great blowout win over a team that has a history of competing with the big boys. We didn't know what to expect out of our guys and Chuckie was a question mark coming off the knee injury.

It was great to see the stadium rocking - love the Third Down for What - and the final score was better than most of us had hoped. Worley managed the game well and appears to be at least serviceable at QB. Glad he finally kept the ball a time or two on the read. The D was awesome...flying around, hitting hard, and wrapping up! I think Medley will be fine at kicker - that first FG miss can be written off to nerves, and Darr punted very well.

The biggest concern to me was that our average starting field position in the first half was outside our 42 (3 times in Aggie territory) and we only scored 17 points. We had 2 three and outs and 3 five and outs in our 9 first half drives. Either Butch and Co made some great halftime adjustments or we just wore them down in the second half (both of which are great)...but we very easily could (should) have put them away in the first half.

The other big issue is the run game. Lane and Hurd combined for 70 yards on 22 carries for a 3.2 average. We averaged 2.8 as a team to the Aggies' 4.2...and our D absolutely shut them down so how'd that happen?

Hopefully we will see lots of improvement from game 1 to 2. If not, game 3 will bring us back down to earth quickly.

Glad we finally have a game to talk about and thankful for a big win and the direction we appear to be headed. GBO!

They loaded the box all night. It was Worleys game to win and he did . The running game did much better when you consider the WHOLE running game. The Vols now run a layered West Coast passing attack. The bubble screens , TE dumps , running back dumps ...are all thought of as part of the running game when it come to play calling and these plays produced in a huge way .

It appeared to me we used scripted plays during the 3-&-outs: 3 straight unsuccessful passes, then identical results on 3 running plays. NO time to panic!

Jalen Hurd is simply too tall to be a RB. He also is too fast and has too many moves. We desperatly need some short, slow RBs if we are going to compete in the southeastern conference.:)

If Hurd learns one thing from Lane, it should be to never quit moving those legs. Two or three times Marlin moved the pile several yards after the scrum and that was demoralizing to USU defense.

First game of the year wasn't it? I saw a lot of teams that looked like they have things to work on. The coaches will work on whatever needs to be worked on.

We won just kick back and enjoy the ride, there will be a few more bumps in the road but this is the beginning of the climb back to the top, pop a top or smoke a green one, just enjoy the ride.

OP makes some valid points about our field position and our failure to put them away in the first half--score should have been at least 31-0 at the half...

I've been waiting to see a GENUINE objective thread that honestly evaluates our performance.

I'm excited about the energy and passion on this team--but still VERY CONCERNED that we are sooooo starved for something positive from our beloved Vols that we actually beat our own chests like we're world-beaters when we beat a team like Utah State.....How far the mighty have fallen?

The same folks who are on here saying how good we looked and expect us to get top 25 votes will be the LOUDEST CRYERS and complainers when OK brings us back down to reality. (remember Oregon last year)...

There was PLENTY that happened last night to warrant genuine concern for when we enter SEC play....we must learn to walk before we can run....I want to see us beat Fla at home before we can justify some of the comments made about this team after just one game....

Still say this team will finish 7-5...and hopefully 8-5 after a bowl win.

GO VOLS!

I'm not as concerned about the run game as I first was. They kept the box loaded all game. They wanted us to pass, which I don't understand wih out talent at WR, but whatever. I guess they were banking on Worley not being as effective as he was.

That's what we're gonna see all year long...and Worley had some success against the DBs he saw last night--which included a UT reject and another true freshman from the Mountain West. There wasn't ONE DB on the field for USU who would make the 2nd team on ANY SEC team....

Just adding a shot of REALITY into the justified celebration....:salute:

Last night was a total team experiment.
Coaches don't know what to fully expect from so many players who have not played a college game. The staff was taking this opportunity to test every person and facet of their game. The staff was letting these boys get a taste of college football and what it takes to win. They are still figuring this team out. It's a continual process throughout the season.
Was there anyone that could play that didn't play in the fourth quarter? We still need another top 10 recruiting class to actually compete for an SEC crown.
Thank God we were relatively injury-free! It's gonna be a long season :peace2:
GO VOLS!

I have also viewed the game a second time just to watch the OL. There was some good and bad blocking, and a few instances where the backs needed to hit the hole harder or make a cut. IMO they will improve, it was only the first game. There did seem to be a bit more consistency in pass blocking.

NegaVol? Ha! I'm an old Sunshine Pumper... I'm as excited as I've been since I last drove to Atlanta to watch us in the SECCG!

Hey man. You're no "negavol." Fair assessment IMO. The coaches are going to be allot harder on the team's performance than you were. Shoot, you didn't even mention all the false starts. Those were drive killers every one.

You are right. Great night, but we haven't arrived quite yet.

Agree. Worley can hit WRs that are open but I think we struggle with man D one on one if we can't get open. I like the way Worley ran the game last night, but I am worried against good teams that our passing game will be that big this year. Problem is not so much the WRs as it is getting the ball to the WRs.

I agree with you but our RBs are going to have to learn to hit the holes a little harder and faster against some of the teams we will be facing in the coming weeks. I know Lane is a patient runner and will turn a potential one yard game into a 6-7 yard shimmy, but our O line is not built to blow holes this season so they will have to do a bit more exploding and less reading because the holes are going to close up fast.

Hard to hit the hole hard when you don't move until you get the ball. When under center the rb can be moving while ball is snapped. In this offense, in the shotgun formation they have to wait for the ball to get to qb, wait for the handoff, then run.

It takes good vision on the rb part

Had the flu last 2 days. He'll be fine. Actually LOS blocking improved 2nd half. The LANE short yardage runs inside red zone was better than average Oline play.

I wasn't aware of that. I had only heard good things about him. Then I seen him get drove into Worley like a Mack truck was pushing him. Thanks for letting me know.

I was impressed with Worley's improvement for sure....but the passing lanes and windows will get MUCH smaller in SEC competition.....

OK will be a very good test for determining what we may expect once we begin SEC play...

If you watch the game again watch closely the DEF line of Utah. When you do I think you will feel better about our Oline play last night. Here's the rap. Yes we had the New Oline first game jitters so what does the Coach of UTAH do? Well if you watched the game you saw part of it. The DEF line of UTAH constantly JUMPED and SHIFTED - right on time. Now you can expect this. But what you don't expect and what is illegal and dirty is the Utah DEF line was shouting out our GO command in the Cadance while they JUMPED and SHIFTED. Because the crowd noise the Refs couldn't hear but it was causing our Oline to JUMP and finally the refs got it stopped after the half. It was dirty play on an inexperienced line and apparantly our guys didn't take time and didn't have time to tell a ref because of our tempo -OR- the refs were being told but couldn't get it stopped. Think about it - All oponents will be trying everything they can this year to exploit our new Olines and Dlines - even if it's dirty play like this. So please calm down and let the Olines settle in and jell and get use to these dirty tactics. They will be fine.
