i couldn't really care less about it except when people talk about how great of a father he was.

All of the good thing's he accomplished and stood for, broken down by you with a single sweeping blow to his personal life.

Dont understand.

Bear Bryant desegregated the SEC. The two are directly linked. IMO, IMHO, tifwiw, just my .02.

Bear Bryant may have done wonders for the South, but I can't say he desegregated the SEC if UT had their first black player years before him.

While it's not really fair to say it's that black and white, it's better than pretending the whole thing was just the South trying to protect states' rights.

Slavery had its part in it, but more to give the north the motivation to keep fighting after the loss at the First Battle of Manasses.

Lincoln had no intentions on ending slavery at the beginning of the war, as made apparent by his First Inaugural Address:

"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."

If not for slavery, do you really think the southern states would have left the union?

Yes!!

The tariffs that the Republican North wanted to levee on cotton exports was very unpopular in the South. The Southern States, which was responsible for the majority of the cotton exports viewed it as a intrusion on the right of the States to levy taxes on its on people(States Rights) without intervention from the Federal Government. The South feared that high tariffs on cotton was an unfair tax that targeted only those States that produced the most cotton and was designed to cripple the economy of several southern states, particularly that of Virginia.

One can make the argument that without Slaves, the cotton production would come to a stand-still, further crippling the south.

So, was the Norths intentions, of freeing the slaves out of the goodness of their hearts, or just another way to punish the south for not accepting the high taxes on cotton?

Thats what makes Lincolns address more interesting, especially if the reason the war was started in the first place was to free the slaves.
