Virginia seceded because they recognized Lincoln as a power hungry dictator willing to kill as many of his “countrymen” as needed to preserve his legacy. Virginia resisted secession until Lincoln began drafting Virginians to bear arms against their fellow southern states.
Lee was first offered command of the Union army. He declined and resigned his commission as his heart lay with the defense of his Virginia home.

Virginia was initially reluctant to secede from the Union. When the men who attended its convention voted for secession in April 1861, it was the third time they had brought the issue to a vote. They voted to secede only after President Abraham Lincoln issued a call to arms in order to suppress the secessionist tendencies in the Southern states. In doing so, Virginians brought upon themselves four years of constant hardship and devastation.

Abraham Lincoln offered Lee the command of the Federal forces in April 1861. Lee declined and tendered his resignation from the army when the state of Virginia seceded on April 17, arguing that he could not fight against his own people. Instead, he accepted a general’s commission in the newly formed Confederate Army. His first military engagement of the Civil War occurred at Cheat Mountain, Virginia (now West Virginia) on September 11, 1861.
