Robert E. Lee Statue Melted In Secret, 'symbolic' Ceremony, To Be Remade Into 'Inclusive' Public Art

The statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee that once stood in Charlottesville, Virginia, was secretly melted down at a ceremonial event.

After both cultural and legal battles, the statue of Lee that sparked the infamous Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally was reportedly melted in a secretive ceremony in order to ensure the safety of those involved. The Washington Post reported that the statue met its end "in a 2,250-degree furnace" when it was "secretly melted down" to become a new piece of public art.

The Washington Post reported that "Swords Into Plowshares," a project led by University of Virginia religious studies professor Jalane Schmidt and Charlottesville’s Black history museum executive director Andrea Douglas, "will turn bronze ingots made from molten Lee into a new piece of public artwork to be displayed in Charlottesville. They made arrangements for Lee to be melted down while they started collecting ideas from city residents for that new sculpture."

I’d like to have the statue in my back yard. I’d tell my grandkids it’s Johnny West or something like that …. My great great grandfather

Doesn't need to end all racism, one less monument to a person who doesn't deserve to be on a pedestal is more than enough
So a guy who risked everything to fight invaders for his homeland against impossible odds doesn't deserve a statue? One who had capably served the US for many years before the war and who counseled reconciliation after hostilities ended?
Then who does?

I hope I live long enough to see the Lincoln Memorial bulldozed into pebbles.

Hoo boy. Education and critical thinking can be your friends if you let them.
His country, Virginia, had legally seceded. You should look into the reason for that. He was opposed to slavery. He fought to defend Virginia, not slavery. I know that doesn't fit the pop culture narrative but it would behoove anyone to study the man's words and actions before parroting the 'fought for slavery' canard.

Defend Virginia in its fight over what particular institution? Critical thinking like buying into the "defend Virginia" narrative as if the Union was going to slaughter every civilian in the state if he didn't become the lead Confederate general?

That's so far off track it doesn't merit an answer.

I’ll bite @EasternVol

Virginia seceded because they recognized Lincoln as a power hungry dictator willing to kill as many of his “countrymen” as needed to preserve his legacy. Virginia resisted secession until Lincoln began drafting Virginians to bear arms against their fellow southern states.

Lee was first offered command of the Union army. He declined and resigned his commission as his heart lay with the defense of his Virginia home.

Virginia was initially reluctant to secede from the Union. When the men who attended its convention voted for secession in April 1861, it was the third time they had brought the issue to a vote. They voted to secede only after President Abraham Lincoln issued a call to arms in order to suppress the secessionist tendencies in the Southern states. In doing so, Virginians brought upon themselves four years of constant hardship and devastation.

Because of his reputation as one of the finest officers in the United States Army, Abraham Lincoln offered Lee the command of the Federal forces in April 1861. Lee declined and tendered his resignation from the army when the state of Virginia seceded on April 17, arguing that he could not fight against his own people. Instead, he accepted a general’s commission in the newly formed Confederate Army. His first military engagement of the Civil War occurred at Cheat Mountain, Virginia (now West Virginia) on September 11, 1861. It was a Union victory but Lee’s reputation withstood the public criticism that followed. He served as military advisor to President Jefferson Davisuntil June 1862 when he was given command of the wounded General Joseph E. Johnston's embattled army on the Virginia peninsula.

The glorification of Lincoln is the best example of how the victor writes the history. Lincoln was a tyrannical maniac willing to kill hundreds of thousands of people to preserve his legacy, not the union.

I think it’s more around the guilt of killing him. Similar to the Kennedy worship. Had he completed his presidency he likely would have been remembered differently. Instead LBJ gets to wear that scorn.

Extremely well said.

Oh but you are correct on your statement about Lincoln’s motives. It’s just he was assassinated in office which is the driver behind the glorification

If he wasn't assassinated I doubt that he would have ever left the presidency peacefully.

With all due respect, the Civil War was fought against the over-arching tyranny of the central government. The founders knew that the states were the natural constraints on the power of the federal government. That constraint was lost with the imposition of the 14th Amendment. The tyranny continues to this day. Think of that when you file your tax return.

The Civil War was pushed by the arms makers in Illinois and New York. They were the ones who supported Lincoln's election.

.

The votes in Virginia were over whelmingly in favor of the Union, until Lincoln called up troops. The Virginia Secession Convention then flipped and voted for secession, but only if it was passed by a popular vote. Almost every single country in Virginia then voted to secede. The vote popular vote was close to 95% in favor of secession
