Not taking anything from the Reds. They have done what teams who want to make the playoffs do by beating the bad teams down the stretch.
Congrats.

If I could describe what has happened to the Cards I would, but I don't have any explanation. This road trip is atrocious.

I'm amazed at how people wildly overreact to every little fluctuation during a 162 game season. This isn't football.

A 2-6 road trip against the Pirates, Nats, and Astros isn't a fluctuation, it's a continuation of a trend that has lasted all season.

Since the Reds series the Cards are 5-11 (and trailing Houston 2-0 as I type) with series losses to the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates, Nationals, and well on their way to one with the Astros.

The Reds, on the flipside, are 12-4 and have taken care of business against teams they should beat.

16 games is 10% of the season. That's more than a blip.

If anything, Card fans got overly excited about sweeping the Reds series because we all thought this team was going to wake up and play like they should be.

It's a little too late to be shrugging off "fluctuations" at this point in the season, especially when it puts you 5 games back as September starts.

Its 6 games back right now and could be 7 in about 45 more minutes, knock on wood.

Something must be in the water in Houston. They swept the Phillies last week.
It has nothing to do with the water. Houston has underperformed all year. There's no reason for that team to have been as bad as they were for the first four months of the season.

No way its over yet. Still have this weekend series, now if we can take 2 out of 3 it's almost a done deal.

I agree with this for the most part. But this Cards team is unlike I've seen in avery long time. I don't think they have the fire to make a 10 or 12 game run. They have the talent but seem to have quit after the series with the Reds.

What was the Cardinals' final record in '06?

82-79

And you'll never convince me that LaRussa didn't deliberately coast that team into the playoffs because half the team was hurt throughout the second half of the year and he knew he could. It's a different animal this year.

That said, I'm really starting to buy into the theory that LaRussa has lost some of his desire and intensity. I would not be shocked if 2010 was his last season managing, or at least the last season before a year or two vacation.

This isn't over-reacting. This is just accepting the fact the St Louis has tucked their tails between their legs and are content watching the playoffs from home this year.

One other thing. In 06 Tony was sitting players where as this year we trail and this team just doesn't seem to have the fire. This past road trip was the time to show life and they didn't.

I don't think it has a thing to do with fire. The facts are that the Cardinals have too many "outs" in their lineup and they have gotten exactly zero consistency from the back end of their rotation.
