The reason for the format is fairly simple. The coaches wanted a 10 team tourney because they knew it would help get more teams in the NCAA. Everything after that was set up so that teams didn't have to play more games thus burning pitching before the regionals. That's why you see the single elimination on the weekend.
Yup, same with the ACC round robin format. Just want to get their teams' RPIs up.
The round robin format is even worse. Many of those games end up being played after the championship game has already been determined. MTSU needed an FIU team that had nothing to play for to beat Arkansas State to keep their side of the braket from being a 3 way tie in which they eventually lost the tie breaker which was regular season seed. Terrible format!
But they don't care about the format. They want the RPI boost.
The format is terrible. While it is unfair that UK got put out with a single loss, it's also unfair that they were able to essentially get two byes. They were playing their third game, we were playing our 5th.
It is "just" a tournament championship, but let's not diminish how it was accomplished. We went 8-1 over 11 days, all against teams ranked in the top 20. We went 5-0 against teams ranked #2, beat #13 and #14, beat the (other) hottest team in the country, and beat LSU twice to send Paul Mainieri packing(his first conference tourney loss in about a decade).
While it may be meaningless, it is still one heck of a run with the bright lights on, and we'll bring back all meaningful contributors outside the Friday starter next season...
