The reason for the format is fairly simple. The coaches wanted a 10 team tourney because they knew it would help get more teams in the NCAA. Everything after that was set up so that teams didn't have to play more games thus burning pitching before the regionals. That's why you see the single elimination on the weekend.

Yup, same with the ACC round robin format. Just want to get their teams' RPIs up.

The round robin format is even worse. Many of those games end up being played after the championship game has already been determined. MTSU needed an FIU team that had nothing to play for to beat Arkansas State to keep their side of the braket from being a 3 way tie in which they eventually lost the tie breaker which was regular season seed. Terrible format!

But they don't care about the format. They want the RPI boost.

That is accurate but that should only be the focus for the big power conferences. CUSA lost a good deserving team because of the format with UAB getting their automatic. It simply doesnt favor the best team. In fact it does just the opposite. A team like Rice will face 3 different number 1 arms and If they lose once they are likely out of it in that format. That is exactly how Menphis got to the championship round.

I appreciate your congratulations but it just seems to me that you are a little butthurt, that is just my opinion though.

The format is terrible. While it is unfair that UK got put out with a single loss, it's also unfair that they were able to essentially get two byes. They were playing their third game, we were playing our 5th.

It is "just" a tournament championship, but let's not diminish how it was accomplished. We went 8-1 over 11 days, all against teams ranked in the top 20. We went 5-0 against teams ranked #2, beat #13 and #14, beat the (other) hottest team in the country, and beat LSU twice to send Paul Mainieri packing(his first conference tourney loss in about a decade).

While it may be meaningless, it is still one heck of a run with the bright lights on, and we'll bring back all meaningful contributors outside the Friday starter next season...

I'm not saying MSU didn't deserve it. The format was agreed to in advance. And, MSU won it on the field. It's not like they stole something.

I'm just saying that the tournament is a joke.

I partially agree on UK. They did not get two byes. They skipped Wednesday, because they were a higher seed than MSU. The other "extra" game MSU had to play was because of their loss on Thursday. The unfair benefit UK received was that they had an easier path to the Thursday winners' bracket games than LSU, who was seeded higher. The only benefit LSU's "bye" gave them was skipping the first round of the losers' bracket. UK and LSU both had to win one game to get to Thursday, and UK got a lower-seeded opponent and then got Wednesday off.

I won't go as far as to say that winning the tournament was "meaningless." When I say the tournament is a "joke," I'm referring to the format. Someone still wins by playing good baseball.

My comment wasn't to diminish the accomplishment, I would be very happy if Tennessee had made the tournament and won it. It's more of a pet peeve really.
