I am having trouble framing a response because, in my mind, being smarter does sort of make him more qualified than she is.
It is not the only thing, of course.
There has always been a resistance to intellectualism from the right. From the Scopes Monkey trial to "I can see Russia from my house" and then the guffaws that arose from it, the right has resisted science and change, as though here is some sort of preordained destiny for the country.
There isn't. We've got huge problems and a changing dynamic and demoraphic and there is so much aversion to that. Under the guise of "traditional values" people are clinging to a lifestyle is that is no longer realistic and is in many ways unjust and immoral.
This anti-intellectualism backlash which has permeated the right wing of late seems more deeply rooted than before. The rise of someone like Palin to such a position of prominence is disturbing, even to the intellectual wing of the right. And that's not just because of concern that she might actually one day run the government. Its because it signals a rejection of relying on our wits to save us, as opposed to adherence to some vague ideal that is no longer rational.
Cliff Notes: Being smart is a legitimate factor to disucss in a POTUS wanna be. And at some point the absence of intelligence is a disqualifier.
