Is there any other applications for it other than night shooting or hunting? Because I don't hunt and don't ever see myself firing it at night. It would be cool to have though.
They make it with the laser dot for day use. If I'm getting an AR 15, I'm prepared to dust off invaders. The night scope would do the same for you and be cheaper, but the IR is better in the dark.

Gotcha. I prefer an old fashion shotgun for home defense. No need to aim, or even see really, and range doesn't mean much. I buying the AR 15 as a sexy toy to take out to the range.
I'm down. I'd spend it on a decent rifle and a very good shotgun. Try night firing. It's a confidence builder. Once you've drilled holes in the dark, you know anyone coming in the dark has a problem. FYI, don't creep up my driveway in the dark. I like night toys. Probably from flying.

it is but to do it right in Alabama you'll need a spotlight, a 12 pack and a sharp knife
:hi:
If you get a chance, get a hold of an XM-8 Assault Rifle.

From one 2nd Amendment lover to another, you definitely want to be able to aim and see what you are firing at. If you can't see them, you probably shouldn't pull the trigger. You just never know.
If somebody is crawling through my bedroom window in the middle of the night, asking who they are or what they are doing isn't going to be high on my priority list. Regardless, I understand what you are saying. I just think shotguns are more practical for home defense because of the ease of use and lower requirement for accuracy.

That's actually a pretty overrated aspect in a home defense scenario. Just about everything in HD happens in 7yds or less. A shotgun blast at that range is still going to be pretty tight. (damn devastating to be sure but hardly a "in that general direction" proposition)
Where would you get one of those? Were they ever even available to civilians?
At any rate I was under the impression the whole project had gotten scrapped back in 05/06, at least for the US military's interest. I suppose HK could still be working with it on their own.
While not quite as cool looking but certainly more available would be a SCAR.

Thanks for posting that mountain lion attack link. Nice dog story, especially since the dog is going to be okay, but it also demonstrates the partisan foolishness of elected officials who are banning all self-defense firearms from our National Forests, thus essentially putting the populace at risk of death from being mauled by a wild animal.[/quote]
Actually in most states carrying in a national forest is legal but not in a national park. Some states even allow hunting in a NF. I believe that guns are allowed in NF across the board BUT the individual states have the right to limit that. NPs on the other hand have flatly banned the carry of firearms.
However, as of sometime in late Feb next year those with carry permits will be allowed to carry in the Parks as well. Do note this ONLY applies to those with a valid carry permit.
Was this just a site you're familiar with (looks like it might be pretty good) in an FYI kinda way or was this in some way connected to the XM8 thing? If so, I can't find the latter.
JP, if you happen to have the ability to have a dog, especially a large one then yeah, it's a real asset. The deterrent effect is so recognized it gives us things like this:
Barking Dog Alarm
Not to mention a large and loyal dog would rather die than let something hurt you.

Had a malamute that even my friends and family were careful around. No "playfully" tackling me with Akila around. Friendly dog, but you didn't mess with "The Man".
Holy crap we've wandered off topic. Umm...my dog would never have voted for Obama and was all about defending home and hearth and conservative values. (that sorta keeps us on topic)
