Control/Kill Bermuda Grass in Fescue Lawn

Zoysia does fine in Clay, you just need to aerate and lime.

They really don’t. They distress the crap grass. Will also turn Bermuda yellow. I still get big patches also crab grass in my zoysia even though it’s as thick as carpet. That stuff takes multiple applications and will weaken CG so hopefully the other grass can out compete.

Yep, preemergent works best on crab grass. I haven't had a problem with fescue, and crab grass killer. Bermuda is a weed in middle Tn. Some of that is caused by seed blends used on public road construction and repair. I've seen Bermuda runners 6 feet long.
I have never wanted zoysia because of the brown winters, but it does a better job of choking out weeds.

Preemergent isn’t to be used on Zoysia lawns though.

Common Bermuda is the kudzu of the grass world.

I loathe Bermuda. Got it all up in my fescue but neighbors on both sides of me have it to the hilt so no use in trying to fight that battle.

Thanks O! I'm a bit OCD about my yard so that's why the Bermuda is grating on me. Most people could probably live with the patches I have but the perfectionist in me wants it G.O.N.E.
Embrace the suck lol....If you are really in Raleigh come on up close to Kerr lake and Want to see what a nice stand of white and crimson clover, crab grass, fine fescue, Tall rebel 2 fescue, creeping red fescue and st augustines looks like with a pinch of Bermuda lol. Bought this farm 5 years ago and it has every green grass And weed known to man and I probably have some unknown to ncsu turf management professors here too.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up the HiYield killer at the advice of my hardware store. I assume it won't hurt the evergreen trees as long as I keep it off the branches/needles?

Correct. Cover evergreens with a garbage bag if small enough or use cardboard as a shield. Spray it late in the evening after sun goes down. Add dish washing liquid to the mix so it’ll stick better. Check the weather; you need 24 hours of no rain after spraying. Keep kids & pets out of the sprayed area for at least 3 days. It’s a poison & animals like to lick their feet. Don’t waste it. Spraying the same area 5 times doesn’t do anything to kill it quicker

Mission accomplished. Waiting to see results!

Progress!! Bout 3 days should see it turning brown. You gonna seed or sod?
I decided to go with sod. The slope in the side yard gets a pretty good run-off, and it's going to be really tough to keep seed on the hill in a decent rain. Plus, I want it looking good this fall.

Doc, my experience with Bermuda in E. TN. I sprayed the entire yard with roundup and let it die. Waited about 2 weeks to let the bermuda green up again and sprayed again. Repeated twice more until the bermuda didn't come back after a couple of weeks. Sowed with fescue and got a beautiful yard the next spring. Noticed later there were a couple of areas where the bermuda had come back. Hit those with the Ormadec as advertised.....knocked it back some. The next year the patches were about 5 times as big. I gave up and started working on the best bermuda yard in Knoxville. Moved before I could get full coverage. IMO, you can't kill it, ever.

Fusillade 2 will kill Bermuda, but it takes 2-3 treatments, and usually at least 2 years. If your neighbors have Bermuda you're screwed. Birds drop seed, wind blows, mowers throw, etc. If you are growing fescue mow at 4 inches. Yes, 4 inches.
I have two neighbors that make the sacrifice, and have beautiful lawns. Not worth it to me.

yep, I always mowed at least 4 inches. Good to know on the Fusillade. Will try on my little condo yard. Although, truth be know, any grass right now is welcome.

One neighbor does, and that's the trouble side. WTH, at least it will all be green...

You got neighbors with Bermuda you might as well just flush any spray, including Roundup, down the toilet.

Ok, I took some new pics and just wanted to verify with others as to what this is.
I attempted to download a few plant identity apps just to see what they said.

"Picture This" called it Nimblewill/Nimbleweed
"Plant Lens" called it St. Augustine grass
"PlantNet" called it Bermuda

These are different angles and shots all of the same weed/grass.

Yeah... I'm like 90% sure now that it is in fact Bermuda. I just wanted some extra confirmation. :(

I'll be more aggressive with the Ornamec now. I wish I had been treating it monthly since April now. I'll see how the Ornamec works for the next couple months. Worst comes to worst I'll cardboard it. At least it's only in the backyard.

About the only thing you can do with Common Bermuda is this to your yard and your neighbors' yards.

Even then, if you use a landscaping company to mow your yard, you're screwed because of the seeds left on the blades.

Sadly I can't blame a lawn mowing company. It's all me doing the mowing. It appeared years ago, probably came in from the wind or an animal or whatever. The attempt was to crowd it out with Fescue which worked for a while. The backyard has taken a huge quality hit over the last few years from heat and drought and a combination of me not treating it regularly like I have in the past.

Yep, that fescue has to be grown tall, have water (especially in our summer droughts), and food but very little in the summer. And weed control. A lot of work. You can also pay a lot of money(to me) to a competent lawn service.

I've still been considering zoysia. I've got some common bermuda in my front yard and am in the same boat as several others here.

I've tried letting my fescue grow tall but it probably doesn't get enough water in the hear of summer to compete with the Bermuda.
