my point was butler reminds me of cp or the other way around with their graceful running styles. never said butler was better than cp. just making a comparision. something other to talk about than all the other stuff going on right now around here.

Guys, quit giving the original poster so much grief. The game has changed immensely since 1939, but ultimately anyone must be measured against his peers and in the context of the game as it was then played. Lindsay Nelson, who started the Vol Network and, later, was best known as the Voice of Fighting Irish football, stated, at the 27:07 mark, "I remember that one very well because it probably was the most exciting run I ever saw."

why is everyone still talking about him. He's gone. He will down, along with Bray, as great talent on the worst stretch of Tennessee football ever.

No athlete in 1939 runs like any athlete in 2012 period! I've got a formal dining room set from 1931 and it looks like it was made for midgets. People nowadays in general are physically bigger, faster and stronger than from that era.

And much dumber.

A lot of them were way tougher than today's athletes.

True enough. However, Butler's touchdown run was in a 21-0 victory over Alabama during a season (1939) in which we finished undefeated, untied and unscored upon.

He runs just like Peter Simon from Florida State. They are both freakish with the ball in their hands. Simon is no longer playing though.

Is this really a debate? that run was not impressive. nobody compares to CP. Hell, that 1939 team would get killed by this years squad...

Way togo out on a limb there. And in other news The new Ferarri would absolutely BOAT race a 1939 ford coupe.
