Could TN have a number 1 class this year?

I will answer the question. Yes if we got all of those guys especially Prater + Lache + Luc then there is no way its not the number 1 class.

Will it happen? No but I think your question was if.

That was what I wanted to know. I also think that several of our recruits will be ranked higher by the end of their senior year. I particularly think Ambles and J Smith could put up silly numbers and be ranked higher.

Damien Robinson,
James Stone
TJ Leifhet
on OL I think this happens that we get these 3.
One RB either Dyer, Lattimore or Seastrunk (Why would any of them come and sit behind Bryce Brown and Oku? Because Hardesty will be gone and they will know that we play freshman and get them publicity).
One more WR either Cobbs or Prater This would be great and with Ambles and Milton would give us the best WR class in the nation.
Bray at QB I view this as very likely.
Ego Ferguson or Ronald Powell at DE I think that there is a very good chance we get one. Ben Martin will have a big year but then be gone.
George Uko at DT I think we get him.
Josh Shirley (I think likely) or Luc (I think possible but unlikely)
Dietrich Riley at safety.

So of the above I think there is the smallest chance we get a 5* RB. It is possible but probably not. I also think Luc is not coming here.

So look down the list and see how much better our class will be than anything UT has been used to. In 2011 we will be again in the top 5 in recruiting and then beating UF and Bama will come down to X and Os and not talent level disparity.

It is not a complete impossibility for us to make it in the top 5, but like others have said our needs will make it very difficult for us to crap the top 3. O linemen and D linemen are an absolute must for this year's class. I am not so worried about a #1 class as I am about getting the players that we need. O line was a major need last year and we didn't secure enough bodies then.

If we honestly got everyone on that list it would be 3-5 five stars, plus 4-7 four stars. If we landed all of those names it would be a top five. jmo

we would have to lost about 5 of our 3 star commitments and upgrade them with 4 star gusy to even have a chance
That's assuming that those 3* guys stay that way. We both know how often these recruiting services try to save face when a major program disagrees with their ratings and jumps on a recruit despite their low ranking....especially if they have a good senior campaign. I expect a number of these guys on our commit list to move up. Ambles will likely get a 5*, and Milton will move up to a 4* if not better.

Getting Cobbs and/or Prater would help bump this class up there pretty good.

Milton is already a 4* on both Scout and Rivals.

Ed O prides himself on finding the hidden gems, the guys that are over looked. He developed his eye for talent under Jimmy Johnson. In my mind if Ed O wants then I want. So we may have some three star boys on the squad, and that is fine by me. They are probably going to develop into some beasts on the field.

I'll take a 10th ranked recruiting class with the evaluation/development talents of the current staff over a # 1 ranked class under Fulmer's regime.

I don't care what our class is ranked, just so long as we get smart, physical, and competitive O and D linemen(in the Stone/J. Smith mold), a couple of decent options at QB (Cam Newton, maybe Bray/Retting/Rees), and a few more pure athletes (Cobbs for example).

They could rank us 117th, but if we get these needs addressed like I think we will, our staff will make a very good living here at UT.

No way we are number one this year.

Great possibility of top 15, in fact I would be shocked if we weren't top 15.

Top 10 AGAIN would be a huge statement... and couple that with a good season, and we will set ourselves up to be in the running for THE top class next year.

Good grief guys, read his post, he is NOT asking if we will have the #1 class. He asked IF WE SIGNED those players he listed would we be the #1 class.

I think that nine wins is very possible and if we get those guys then we will probably get a #1 class, but i think that our staff is more interested in getting the players that we need, which is a lot of lineman and a QB so that will lower our rankings.

Our #1 class in 2005 had TWO losing seasons.[/q

Stars on "Rivals" or "Scout" don't necessarily equate into SEC or National Championships.. Some of those 4 and 5 star athletes have ways of falling by the wayside when; heart, tenacity, competition, work-ethic, responsibility, real manhood, common decency and civilized behavior are thrown into the equation.

Stars usually mean ability but not nessarily performance.

I don't see us having a "#1 ranked" class this year mostly because of our need for linemen this year, but that doesn't matter to me. We had the "#1 ranked" class in 2005 and look where it got us.

Is that according to Scout? I know we were actually ranked #4 on Rivals.

If TN gets 9 wins (which is 1 more than I am predicting but I think is very possible) and they start to pick up the following guys added to what they have will it be enough for the mythical recruiting NC?

Damien Robinson,
James Stone
TJ Leifhet
on OL
One RB either Dyer, Lattimore or Seastrunk
One more WR either Cobbs or Prater
Bray at QB
Ego Ferguson or Ronald Powell at DE
George Uko at DT
Josh Shirley (I think likely) or Luc (I think possible but unlikely)
Dietrich Riley at safety.

If our last 10 players include these guys are we a number 1 class?
there is no way we will be able to pass Texas at this point. all of their early recruits are from Texas, have not even recruited nationally yet for 2010.

If our last 10 players include these guys are we a number 1 class?

If, as the original poster hypothesized, we fill the last 10 spots as follows:
Stone - 4
Robinson - 4
Leifheit - 4
Bray - 4
RB - 5
Prater - 5
DE - 5
Uko - 4
Luc - 5
Riley - 4

That will leave us with 25 commits and 3.72 avg stars.* This would put us in the 4-5 range.

Assume further, that one of our existing 4 stars get bumped to a 5 star, and two of our existing 3 stars get bumped to a 4 star. This would leave us with 25 commits and a 3.84 avg star rating. This likely puts us at the #1 spot, and very likely puts us at either 1 or 2.

Assume even further, that we sign 28 commits instead of 25. And that 2 of these last 3 commits are 4 stars...this will almost certainly put us in the #1 spot.

I have run some numbers on past classes and developed a pretty accurate (+/- 100 points) formula for how Rivals arrives at the final tally. In other words, I am not just tossing out uninformed -- and, indeed, false -- conclusions like the 50 or so posters before me on this terrible terrible thread.

*Assumption: for the sake or argument, I am assuming that our currently no-starred JUCO's get 3 stars apiece.

without knowing what others are going to get, hard to say. guess it would be in conversation but might end up 8 or 10 depending on what other top programs do
