Country Roads vs. Rocky Top

Just stop, lol.

There are no mountains or pretty rivers near Morgantown, I assure you of that.

Surely you know where west Tennessee is? West Texas? But not west Virginia? John Denver went along with it because West Virginians attached themselves to it, despite the geographical references to the Blacksburg, Virginia area.

Oh yeah, and there is this....believe it or not my roomate was watching a Tennessee game with me sophomore year - when the band played rocky top he said:
"hey, they're copying the Morgantown WV song!"

The Monongahela River flows right through downtown Morgantown, I can assure you of that

I drove by Morgantown to Pittsburgh last week. Drove right up through the middle of WV. I thought it was a nice drive.

The Monongahela River has over 15 sewer plants on it upstream of Morgantown and constantly smells bad. It is one of the Top 10 polluted rivers in the world. There are 2 other top 10 most polluted rivers in WV (the Coal River and the Ohio River)

Those aren't mountains. Yes, I've driven to the top of Spruce Knob, climbed north fork "mountain", and repelled Seneca Rocks. Not Mountains...go to the smokies, black mountains, or anywhere out west and get back to me.

If that's your idea of good scenery...sorry you live in central Alabama.

Also, as someone who has hunted, fished, and explored much of WV for work purposes, it is prettiest from a distance - mostly the interstates. A lot of the mines are designed to be obstructed from view from highways and major interstates. Behind that ridge on the interstate is usually something like this :

It's hard to really describe WV to people who haven't experienced it firsthand for awhile.

WVU = pretty awesome and pretty awesome people overall.

WV and Wvians = completely different story.

This is definitely a cool tradition.

I do prefer Rocky Top, though.

It's just so versatile. It works to amp up the crowd/players before the game, it works after a touchdown, it works to celebrate after winning a game.

But my favorite is how it can be used almost aggressively at the other team/fans. I know a few rival fans who have been in Neyland who say it's sort of unsettling to be on the receiving end of 100,000 people screaming Rocky Top at the top of their lungs when their team is getting a beat down.

Excellent point. Rocky Top is faster paced and its staccato-like cadence makes it more effective as a "war" song, particularly when the Big Orange are in the process of unleashing their own thunder and lightning. Take Me Home, Country Roads, on the other hand, is a slower, softer-paced melody. Indeed, John Denver's version of it is, in my opinion, the prettiest song that he ever recorded. Content-wise, however, I prefer Rocky Mountain High.

Both are great. I enjoy the environment of stadiums more than I can express. Makes sports special.

That being said, Rocky Top is dynamic.

Just watched this for the first time. Very cool, no chills but very cool. I also just watched a Howard's Rock video with the buses going around the stadium. That was awesome as well.

I obviously love our traditions the best, but as I get older, I appreciate all of the college traditions much more. That's why college football is so special

Sorry but rocky top>>>>>>>>>>>>country roads. Not even close.

Take it from a rival fan who's been to both stadiums.

Rocky Top blows away Country Roads, and it's not even close.

During pre-game after UT's band plays the last note of the visiting team's fight song, the crowd goes into a frenzy, because you know what's coming next.

Watching Country Roads live in Morgantown was underwhelming by comparison...it had all the excitement of singing your alma mater.

Of all people then you should know this. Rocky Top is a fight song. Country Roads isn't. It's the equivalent of when the POTS band closes with the Tennessee Waltz. "Hail West Virginia" is their fight song.

Hmmm pretty sure Down the Field is TNs fight song. Its a great song but people just don't know it. This is coming from a 24 year old fan. Just to be clear I love Rocky Top and the whoo, if for no other reason than opposing fans, including 99% of my family, hate it specifically (the whoo).

I'm an anti-woooer! I've hated it since it came on in the late 90's. Others have said it was in the early 90's but watch any game until '97'ish and you won't hear a woo.

I started UT in 1994 and they were already wooing

I was there in 1994 and there was no "noticable" wooing. I vaguely remember it in '97 and a little more in '98.

Just to prove my point, here is the 1996 Bama game. Start at the 22:00 mark and at 22:30 you'll not hear a woo.
