Counzo Coach of the Year?

The fact some people will probably give votes his way is enough for me. He took a bunch of AAU/streetballers and turned them into a tough nosed, defensive minded team. Keyword being "TEAM!" I don't think any school outside of Murray St has the possibility of taking the Natl COY award out of Cal's hands at this point. Cal has done an amazing job this season IMO. If the award was on improvement from OOC to CO play, then I think CCM would be in the discussion without a doubt.

you might be right, not any coach can or will arrange to have their recruits pass their SAT's, or make backroom deals to and pay that kind of money for 5 star recruits. Any coach that has had to forfeit the amount of wins that he's been responsible for at both UMass and memphis should not be considered for any national award. What's it saying to the rest of society, It's OK to cheat!!

Seriously? Has he really been "responsible" for any of that junk? I hate Cal as much as the next guy wearing orange, but you have to respect him and the job he has done at UK...

Cal had a top 5 ranked team with loads of talent and they have maintained that ranking. Martin has had an 11-12th place team playing top 5 ball in the conference. Martin should get it beetween the two.

He was responsible first hand for roses brother receiving improper benefits.

That was proven.

Why no mention of LSU's Trent Johnson? LSU is also surpassing expections this season. I see it as Calipari's to hopefully screw up and then between Coach Martin or Trent Johnson depending how strong they finish.

Yes. He's been responsible for that "junk" both directly and indirectly. And in due time it'll come out that the same "junk" is happening in KY. I have abolutely no respect for the man what so ever, in fact, i wish I had the ability to reach thru the TV and B****slap him just because he crys all the time to the refs. Respect for Him? no way. back to the topic though, take any coach in the sec, and let them take last years, or this years subs and benchwarmers and turn em into a .500 ball club. Only Martin or the LSU coach would be successful. Take away KY's starting five and add in 5 players that are 3 stars or less and Cal COULDN"T do it. No way does he deserve nor has he earned COY.

I'm not argueing merits. If it wasn't a beauty pageant... well, it wouldn't be a beauty pageant and the COY would mean more IMO.

Indirectly responsible spreads out the risk sufficiently enough to not be responsible IMO. Respect as a man? Nah, respect as a coach? Absolutely

Flying on a plane seems like a lesser ordeal than a cookout, but neither seem "awful" IMO. It's not like a stacked handshake.

The fact he continued to bring roses brother on trips and pay for things seems like it may have been something that had been talked about prior, in which case would make it bet serious.

With that said though, the way it was found was in no way a huge violation. Just bringing up that he has been found guilty of something before.

I get the point, but at the time that pre-season 11th ranking came out, a lot of people here thought it was bogus. And it was.

The media missed big time (shocking, I know). Is that a legitimate standard to measure expectations by?

It's been discussed on here before. It's Cal's to lose, and he would probably have to lose the last three games to lose the COY award. He has made a team out of individual talent and they play unselfish, team ball. They defend at a high level as well. CCM has done an admirable job, but Cal shouldn't be punished just because he has met and maintained expectations because of the talent level HE recruited.

If we miss The Dance, there's no way CCM should get a Coach of the Year vote. You can't give him the award for a turnaround that isn't even fully completed, when said turnaround is partially based on simply being absolutely terrible for several games in the first half. If we finish strong and crash The Dance, there will be more of an argument for it.

If we win out and win the SEC tourny which is a big IF then we can start to talk about what awards he deserves. Right now cal deserves it. (if he could accomplish the above then I think he would be in the running for coy national)

Once again...

SEC awards are given at regular seasons ending, NOT after the SEC Tournament.

just think if we had only been able to win those we should have... Today's deli: ham, turkey and provolone on white w/mustard, pickles and bbq chips.

No offense OP, but much of Martin4 success is due to the rest of the SEC being atrocious outside of KY. That said, Martin looks like a good hire and the kids play hard for him

We. Were. Picked. To. Be. 11th. No way to spin this. Martin did a great job.

No way Martin gets COY, but great job. Scary thing is I think he may be a better coach than Cal or Pearl. But they are movie stars, he's not. If he can continue to recruit, watch out.
