'22 CT DT Jeffrey M'ba (JUCO)

He's here

He got better throughout the year, but I hope he improves and can be used more situationally next year.
Page will probably use his covid year but who knows.
Honestly, Beasley had 79 tackles, 1.5 sacks. Sure, he had his flaws but i was surprised with his production. He was also not with the team at all for all of April May or June. Then Mitchell goes down after only playing in the Pitt and Florida game (7 total tackles). Could have been much worse

Guys get better. Cut him some slack. He was asked to do more than his role should have been because no one else was ready.

I literally know why he was playing and hope we can find a solution to that. Sure guys get better. You aren’t telling me anything new. But I don’t want to see that again. That’s just me. We can agree to disagree.

You don't want to see him make a contribution or play if he's improved? He played too much and played a role that he wasn't ready for.

It is also worth considering that once the last staff's development kicked in... Henry T and Crouch weren't great either.

The first person to arrive will be M’ba who came in on Thursday night but his official doesn’t start until Friday morning. As Austin pointed out on the board earlier this week, we feel like this is a Tennessee versus Oregon showdown. M’ba’s mother is in from France for both of these officials. Now I guess you can’t rule out Auburn but she wasn’t there for that visit so just following that makes this a two team race barring something unforeseen.

Here’s how I got it:

DE: Baron/ Bumphus
DT: Thomas/ M’Ba
NT: Simmons/ Terry
LEO: Young/ Harrison

Mostly the same just moved around a little

Baron isn’t nearly big enough to be a full time SDE. That position in this defense needs to weigh 270-290. As I said earlier, I do think we’ll see one of the LEOs move to SDE on passing downs. Here’s my guess on the regular front 4, if we land M’ba:

DE- Jeffrey M’Ba (Jr.), Bryson Eason (Jr.), Dominic Bailey (RSSo.)

DT- Omari Thomas (Jr.), Latrell Bumphus (RSSr.), Kurot Garland (RSSr.), Amari McNeill (RSFr.)

DT- Elijah Simmons (RSJr.), Da’Jon Terry (RSJr.), Jordan Phillips (Fr.)

LEO- Byron Young (Sr.), Roman Harrison (Sr.), Tyler Baron (Jr.), Joshua Josephs (Fr.), James Pearce (Fr.)

Bumphus could also play the SDE spot a lot.

I saw him improve by the end of the season. So I agree with you. But my biggest concern with Beasley is his size…he needs to add weight for that position, but if he hasn’t done it in 4 years, maybe he can’t?

Honestly, regardless of where they are slotted on the depth chart, from what I noticed this season, all of the D-linemen aside from Simmons really, slide around quite a bit. That may just be a function of our lack of depth, and thereby need for each of them to understand and be able to play multiple positions on the line. However, I was very intrigued by the combinations quite a bit.

Also, I really love how they use stunts and twists to get the ends (Young especially) isolated on less athletic interior linemen. I think there were certainly times where that did hamper us, though, because it took our athletic ends off the edge and contributed to losing contain on the QB.

That's an impressive depth chart imo. What do you foresee in the back 7?

I feel like 6’1 225 is just fine. I do think Page could add some at 6’2 220 currently, probably closer to 215

I could see Charles and Rucker pushing some of these guys for PT. We have to get more athletic in the back end. I appreciate how gritty McCullough and Flowers have been, but it feels to me like they miss plays because they either (a) aren't instinctive enough to make up for a slight lack of speed, or (b) aren't fast enough to make up for a slight lack of instincts. Either way, it feels like they just have trouble being in THE spot they have to be in, which looks even worse because they are close to the play but not able to make the play.

As for the linebackers, absent a transfer, I think you're pretty spot on. I really hope we get a transfer. I also appreciate Beasley for the improvement and honestly for the fact that we had to have him. He did miss a lot of tackles this year. (I know that may seem nitpicky as he made 70+ on the season). There were some games where it was maddening to me watching him whiff on guys.

Good looking list. Wish some of the younger guys could have gotten a little more exposure/experience. I'm guessing they were trying to preserve redshirts, but surprisingly we played starters late into lopsided wins most of the season.

I don't disagree with that. I think he was asked to do more than he's capable of doing. He should be a role/situational player IMO. Like you said, if he can't get bigger and stronger then he's not an every down LB.

Finally someone said it!

He also didn't play horrible all the time. He could easily be better.
If someone else like Willis develops then Bailey can become a situational/role type of LB and do well. He's not an every down LB right now. He lacks the power to take on blocks.

I mean, he really did beat up the cats.

Three thoughts:
#1 I think there is a very good chance that Charles is a starter at one of the safety spots.

#2 I hope, hope, hope somebody is good enough to replace Burrell at CB but I will have to see it to believe it.

#3 Looking at that LB depth chart......we desperately need a day 1 starter at LB from the portal.

Flowers went thru Sr Day; I'm not really expecting him to return. Weirdly, neither did LaBruzza, but I cannot imagine him consuming a scholarship spot to work on a post-grad degree and only play in mop-up duty.

This seems pretty close, but SDE will depend on M’ba’s athleticism, Baron’s growth, and Eason’s development IMO. I think Flowers is gone and Charles will take his spot. I’d love to see Gilbert step into that starting safety role because McCollough is terrible. I think jourdan Thomas is a safety all the way. We’re out of it for Sebastian Cheeks. I pray Tolan could leapfrog Beasley…so many missed tackles…
