Hushpuppies are round, dang it! The batter is dropped into the hot fat! That makes them round!!! -ish!!!

Wiki: "A hush puppy (or hushpuppy) is a small, savory, deep-fried round ball made from cornmeal-based batter. Hushpuppies are frequently served as a side dish with seafood and other deep-fried foods."

They aren't supposed to look like weirdly tidy oblong cat turds!

Round! Round, I say, dammit!!!

As far back as I can remember, all hush puppy's resembled "cat turds". At restaurants, and when we used to by them at the grocery store from the freezer aisle. I can't remember if they were Mrs. Paul's or Ore-Ida, but they were good.

The round ones seem to have taken over in the 90's and everyone I've tried seem to be greasy poof balls. Lol

Son. Son. Where did you grow up?

Hushpuppies were always round, from my earliest memories (age 6 or so, so ~1960.) My parents were from Memphis, the home of fine+unhealthy cooking, but my mother was never much of a cook, and I don't think that she ever made them. But when we'd go water-skiing in Florida, later deep-sea fishing off the NC and VA coasts, and eat seafood for dinner, they were most certainly round, and every place I've eaten them since then: they've been round. And yes, they are greasy poofballs, as God intended. You have some sort of problem with that?

Now, if you're buying some pre-fab thing labeled "hushpuppies" in the freezer aisle, I guess all bets are off. Real hushpuppies are deep-fried and served immediately from that vat of hot grease, so maybe they can't be rassled into some sort of frozen blob.

The ones my mother made in the 50s were round. The ones you buy in a bag are really bad. Try making some from scratch with a simple recipe. Mostly cornmeal and onion with a little sugar. Milk or buttermilk.

What planet are you from. Hushpuppies is round. Have always been round. Although, I never ate anything out of the freezer aisle from the store. That is nasty. Best hushpuppies are cooked in grease that has been used to fry country style bacon followed by deep fried fish and then the hushpuppies.
